What are the school hours for your kids? In our district, all the schools are really split up- there's a separate school for just K-1, then another for 2nd-3rd, one for 4-6, etc. And it seems like each school has slightly different start and end times. I guess it's so the bus transportation can accomdate all the kids. It does make it difficult though when you have more than one child - it seems like every other year (and sometimes every year), we have to adjust to a new schedule. Right now, my youngest son school starts first but next year I think it will be my older son's.

Just curious how it is in other parts of the country :)

It is a bit different down here in Texas.  In Michigan where I grew up, the high schoolers went in the earliest and then the middle school and then the elementary school.  So the high schoolers were out and home early if they babysat or for sports, etc.  Here in Texas, the elementary school kids go in early and then the older ones go in later.  My kindergartener starts school at 7:50 and gets out at 2:45.  My high schooler starts school at 8:50 and gets out at 3:50.

We have staggard start times, sort of We have 5 k-8 schools 3 have extended day so they run from 7:30-3:30 for all grades and the other 2 have staggard starts for k-8. Our school 1-6 is 8:15-2:15 with kindy going 8:15 to 2:05 and then 7-8 7:45-2:20. The other non extended day has kindy start at 8:20 then 1-6 8:15 to 2:15 and 7-8 7:45-2:20 and high school is 7:45-2:15. Because they are all k-8 school, drop off and pick up can be a madhouse, DS school has over 900 kids and its right on a main road. There are 3 or 4 days a year when ALL kids get out at same time and there is NO after school and its a nightmare!! But that isn't why the staggar. In MA there are hour requirments that differ for elementary, middle and high school but I am assuming middle schoolers have an extra 5 min because of the crowd issue; although to be honest takes a lot longer then 5 min to clear the elementary kids.

Not a lot of kids at DS school takes a bus. We do have an over 3 mile rule to qualify for a bus and DS lives the farthest of his friends nad we are half a mile short of 3 miles from school. I think more kids take public transit then school buses and since most schools are on a public bus route the city takes advantage of that. By the time my youngest is old enough for kindy I will have 1 year of them both starting the same time and then I will have 1 going at 7:45 and one 8:15 to the same school!! but think I will just do before school for the youngest which would be same start time and then since afterschool for middle schoolers is only until 5 not 5:30 see about changing my hours to get out earlier instead of going later but then again I am waiting 30 min at night for other one to get out since its either a 4:15 or 5:30 pick up...you can just never win!!

Wow, I guess it's because I live in a small town but here we have one school that is for K-8 and then the high school, grades 9-12.  There is only a 1/2 difference start and end times between the K-8 school and the high school.
