When Do You Let Your Grade Schooler Walk Home From School Alone?

I let Tyler and Kristen walk home from school when they were 8 and 9, but they weren't completely alone.

We live too far from the school to really walk but, if we lived closer, I would say maybe 9 years old. There are so many kids who live close by and walk that they would always be in a group. If I lived somewhere more dangerous that age would increase quite a bit.

That's what I did. Although the article says 10 or 11, I think it all depends on where you live.

My oldest son has been asking to ride his scooter to school for about a year (he's now 10). We are in a busing area so it is quite a walk. I was starting to consider it but he'd be alone and this story was just another reminder (or scare?) that you can never be too careful. I think I'll be continuing to drive him or he'll take the bus. You just can never be too safe!
