18th birthday gift for daughter

My plans to buy my daughter a cedar chest for her 18th birthday (modern day hope chest of sorts) have been usurped by my ex-husband's plans to make her one. I know the handmade one will be a treasure and don't want to interfere. Any suggestions as to something memorable as an alternative gift for her special passage into adulthood? My first time here and I look forward to hearing from anyone. Thank you!

We got our daughter a laptop.

How about a nice engraved watch?

Not sure if your dd is one to appreciate this or not, but how about a family heirloom or sorts? Perhaps one of her grandmother's rings or wedding gown, granddad's pocket watch, or an old favorite family photo, classicly framed - something to put inside the cedar chest?

I love the sentimental theme and even if she is not overwhelmed by sentimentality now, later on she will be overjoyed I'm sure.

It really depends on her interests doesn't it? And how much money you are willing to spend, lol.

If she's big into fashion and trends, a really nice designer handbag or similar. Designer handbags are expensive but a beautiful, classicly designed bag will bring her into adulthood (or young woman-hood) nicely and if she cares for it she can have it for years and years. (See eluxury.com for thoughts).

If she is a techno-phile, something cool from the Apple store. A MAC, an iphone, a cool video ipod.

If she likes to travel -- some nice luggage or a trip even a family trip is nice.

Now the above are expensive gifts. But less expensive would be the something like a beautiful piece of gold jewelry (something engraved even for the occasion). Or a day at a spa (very "adult" eh).

Do you know that I can't even remember what I got DD for her 18th BD and it was only last March? Old age must really be setting in! Although I can remember that I got her a new phone for Christmas and a tuneup for her car (her idea). We got her a laptop for graduation.

Now that you mention it - the lap top may have been for graduation for Jason in 2005.
