Hi. I have a question about auto insurance and teen drivers. My dd got her driver's license a couple of weeks ago. The day after she got her license, I called my insurance agent and told him to add her as a part-time driver to my car. My husband's car is a company car so she can't drive it.

Wouldn't you know, someone told me a couple of days after I called the agent, that if you have more drivers than vehicles in your household, you don't need to add your teen driver. Does anyone know if this is correct? If this is true, I could kick myself, because my insurance really skyrocketed. I was also told that if you have the same number of drivers as cars, or more cars than drivers than you need to add your teen. Please let me know if this is correct or not. Thanks so much!

P.S. If the above is correct...then I hope this info helps any parents out there whose teen is about to get their license.

The ins. on my car is less than $1000 a year and I have higher liability coverage and collison coverage, which my DD doesn't have--I just got her the minimum required by law. As my DD said, it's not fair that teens can't get the safe driver discount because it's assumed they won't be a safe driver. They should be given the chance. She has had her license for 1.5 yrs, hasn't had any accidents or tickets and she still gets the shaft. You should see how they have raised the fines for speeding for kids under 18, too. It's basically so expensive that one speeding ticket will mean you will be paying about $500 plus losing your license for a while. If it actually makes kids not speed it will be a good thing because there were 2 fatal one-car accidents over the weekend.

I don't know where you are but I would find that strange.
Here, I had to put my DD on my insurance.

I have heard that if you have the same number of cars as drivers, the insurance companies will not believe that the child is not the principle driver on one of the cars.

Thank you all for clearing up so much of the confusion about teens and auto insurance. I was feeling kind of sorry for myself and now feel much better knowing that we did the right thing by adding our dd as a part-time driver even though it's gonna be an expensive bill. I knew you guys could clarify any incorrect information that was given to me.
