Another Teenage Role Model In Trouble

I think this past year has been *the* year for celebrities/musicians/actors who are admired by teenagers not exactly living up to their squeaky clean images.

People like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears -- they've been somewhat spiralling out of control with outrageous behaviour and substance abuse for some time.

The sad thing is that the fan boards (which my dd was perusing last night) are full of teenage fans who are saying "what's the big deal? teenagers get pregnant all the time and they handle it."

I always hope that something good will come out of something, well, not so good. Maybe the family as a whole will learn from this, get a grip and fulfill the roles they are meant to...

Frankly...this young girl, and I can't even say young woman, she's only a year older than my DD, well, she's rich, famous, beautiful and talented. She's been involved with an older boy for some time. Clearly she was sexually active, I mean, come on...Mom should have had that child on birth control and been talking to her about things of importance, on a regular basis. It's easy to say, not my kid. But yea, your kid, my kid, her kid, they're all going to do things that shock us, scare us, or surprise us, at some point. This mom was too busy writing a book she has no business writing instead of doing her job.

I think it would require a great deal of insight, humility and honest self-evaluation for a person to recognize their role in these situations.

ITA and very well said.

I admit I read this yesterday and at first I snickered, then I pictured my dd, not much younger than this girl, going through this in such a public way.

So, I'm not meaning to start a huge debate or problems, so anyone feel free to ignore this post LOL.

First of all , I think it's a shame that "role models" keep on disappointing us and our kids. Because they are in the limelight, I really do think they need to keep up to a higher standard than the rest of us regular people. Like the baseball scandal - if there are no real repercussions (like the player on the list that signed a very lucrative contract only yesterday) than what does that say to our kids?

Now to the controversial question - do you think that a president (or presidential candidate) should hold themselves to a higher standard as one of the most influential role models our kids see? I understand that they are human - but for the four or eight years should they be held more accountable as a role model to all of us?
