Anyone still here?

How is everyone's new year going so far? Any big plans for the weekend? Jason was home for a week over Christmas and is back at school - 2nd year med student. Justin was working with an army recruiter hoping to get into the military. Unfortunately a stupid choice he made back when he was 19 came back to bite him a year or so ago and he was put on 2 years of unsupervised probation in Dec. 2011 for a misdemeanor. The recruiter had him go back to court; he was able to get off probation and was hoping to get a military waiver, which the recruiter said was fairly routine. He was all set to get the waiver pushed through and lock in when they told him that after all that - they can't even start the waiver process until 2 years after his conviction, which brings him back to Dec. 2013. He was pretty bummed. This of course happened the day before classes started at the local CC. Not that he has any desire to go back to school right now. He talked to an Air Force recruiter and they can't start THEIR waiver process until 90 days after he was released from probation, which won't be til March 18. So currently he's looking for a job and not having much luck. He's a good kid but he's almost 23 and just doesn't have any direction so was really hopig to get into the military. No big plans this weekend. There are fights on tomorrow that dh and Justin will watch. Dh and I are meeting my sister and bil for an early dinner on Sunday. Hope you all have a great weekend!

I'm still here, but it's discouraging to check in every day and find so little activity on the boards.  Right now, my only teen, Greg, is keeping us busy.  He's got the lead in the high school musical, Aida (the Elton John/Tim Rice show, not Verdi's opera--same story, different music), so he has play rehearsal after school and on weekends.  Our district vocal solo and ensemble event is coming up Feb. 1, so he's also preparing for that, and both of us are preparing to sing with a special choir providing music for a big Confirmation Mass at the cathedral in three weeks.

He's also picking up service hours for Spanish Honor Society, working the concession stands for various events (Tomorrow he has to be at school at 8 a.m. to work concessions for a cheerleading competition) and the following week he's making fleece blankets for the homeless shelter.)  Semester exams were last week, but the ACT and Michigan state exams are looming in early March -- oh hurrah, the same week as tech week for the musical.

Usually Greg gets himself where he needs to go, either on foot or bike, but with temps in the single digits and below zero wind chills, Mom's taxi has been back in service.

My 20-somethings are busy with school (Chris) and work (Matt), and my "1 lil gal" Cathy is busy selling Girl Scout cookies--she's set a goal of selling 500 boxes and she's already passed 300.  She's a go-getter, that's for sure.

Still loitering although ds20 is almost 6 months beyond being a teen.  Cold, warm, frigid, wet...weather taking us on wild rides these days.  A few days ago the high was 17; will be 60 on Monday.   DS is enjoying his 2nd semester of jr year at a different U, met a new girl (also an art major) and is cautiously moving forward there. He's looking into another job (hates lifeguarding for 3.5+ years but it's always available, but the hours like 5-7am have been awful), has one good lead for future PT work and another to look into. He's still talking about teaching art - we'll see how the job market is in a few years - hoping...

Thanks for starting this thread! i hope a lot of people are still here. I agree it does get discouraging sometimes to see little activity but that's where you guys can help! Keep on posting and the activity will return, especially as the tech teams keeps slaving away at all the log-in errors. Posting encourages more posting as well as vice versa- if people stop by and DON'T see activity, they are less likely to post themselves.

And as always, HUGE thanks for sticking with us!

I'm still here, but am discouraged by the continuing difficulty in logging in and staying logged in. My oldest is a senior in HS awaiting college decisions (she only applied regular decision because she didn't have a clear first choice) and navigating her first real relationship. I actually had to encourage her to take more risks because she has always been so cautious and afraid of not being in control. I guess allowing herself to get close to this boy is her first risk! She still doesn't have her driver's license, though...

My son is a sophomore who just turned 16. He has really come out of his shell this year after being cast as the male lead in Orwell's 1984. He's still somewhat socially clueless (on the Asperger's spectrum), but is actually enjoying high school after miserable years of bullying in middle school. He's turning into a person I really admire, not only because he's a truth-teller, but because he's so bold.

I am still here, enjoying Chicago-land's first one inch plus snow in 330 some days!! That is a record for snow-less -news in our area. We got 1.1 inches!!! My two freshmen are doing great. Ds in HS is enjoying his year and made the honor roll. After a very rocky start and him talking about dropping all these Honor's classes to this is a big deal. He is loving scouts and hockey. He is waiting for lacross season to start. He also is in the pe band and jazz bands at school. So, we don't see him much. Dd is loving college. She is nearing the end of her second trimester. She is now co -president for the equestrian club. She went out for the regular team for lacross but didn't make it. She does play at the club level and loves it.

Hey Pam, It's Cat. I check on the board now and again... B is 23 and working hard. Works for me when I can get him (I don't pay enough, lol). He's a good hand. Has 5 years of parole left, and that keeps me on edge. I think to myself, though, how much worse it could be. A judge in town gave two 23 y.o. boys 65 years apiece for drugs. Totally ridiculous and I feel terrible for their mothers.... But that's Texas, I guess. I left my husband of 15 years last January. It's been a strange year, to say the least. I own a garage now, and my ex worked for me until Friday, when I fired him. I might go broke (he'd been one of the best mechanics in town, with a huge following), but he cussed me one too many times last week, and the week before, forgot to put lug nuts on a vehicle that crashed 1/4 mile from the shop. And the week before that hit a customer's car with another customer's car in the parking lot. It was getting to be too much. Going bankrupt would be less stressful than what I've put up with, lol! I'm glad you started this thread, and also to "see" some familiar faces. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, too. Rebecca

My post had paragraphs when I sent it!  That's weird.

We’re all back in the groove with work and evening classes. This semester, our couples only have classes three evenings per week, which shaves off about two hours per week in commuting. At work they have gone from being flunkies to research slaves that will allow them to use their education and accumulate some work experience hours towards CPA licensing.
