This was just prescribed for my 16 year old ds, and I'm hoping to learn more about it and what to expect.

If you go to the Troubled Teens board, you will likely find someone whose teen is on Strattera. Our DR recommended it for my 17dd, but we declined because ever ADHD med she's ever tried exacerbated her tourette syndrome tics.

You could also check out www.conductdisorders.com and visit the general forum - LOTS of people there have kids on strattera.

Good luck

Strattera isn't one that my son has been on.

My dd is taking Strattera and is doing well on it. She had tried Ritalin (with no result) and then was on Adderall from 1st grade though 8th grade (with the dosage being increased sequentially during that time). Because she came to me early in her freshman year and said that she didn't think the Adderall was helping any more, we went back to the psychiatrist. He gave us the option of trying several different medications, and we chose Strattera. The doctor said we would just have to give it a try and see if it helped, if not, we could try something different. What he was in essence saying was that it was "trial and error" in finding the right medicine at the right dosage level. If your son was just prescribed this medicine, it may take a few weeks before he will be able to tell you whether or not it's helping. Of course, any adverse side effects should be immediately reported to his doctor.

Good luck!

ADD meds are a trial and error issue - how it affects one child may be the complete opposite of how it affects the next. DD has never been on Strattera, but we tried Adderall and Concerta when she was 9 (6 years ago) - both made her completely moody, no appetite, couldn't sleep and if there were any positives I didn't notice it. We chose the no medication route. I think her doc wanted her to try Strattera next but I had enough - she is the "ditzy" add and we came to the conclusion she can live a happy and fulfilling life without those drugs....

Good luck and I hope you get a "winner" with the first try!!

Thanks for all the feedback- I am REALLY happy that he is TRYING meds, and I have all my fingers and toes crossed that this first experience will be a positive one and he'll get relief.I was here about a YEAR ago asking how on earth I could get him into therapy and on appropriate medication. Well, he's been in therapy for nine months now, and is trying the Strattera - so I'm thinking we are making some progress! :-)

hi... my daughter had been on strattera and while it did help her with the ADD we found after a couple of months it dropped her into a depression. She began talking about how it wouldn't matter to anyone if she no longer existed and would make random comments about death. That same week we saw a blurb on the news that Strattera can cause depression in some teens. We quickly removed her from it and she's now on Concerta and doing fine. Good luck!!!
