Connor has always had a Tracfone and up until recently it's been all that he's needed.

When we wanted a very basic plan, we found a reseller (called "cellular for less" where we live). This was about 8 years ago. We couldn't check minutes on line or do anything fancy and actually picked up our phone at their home office but it was cheap - although I think more than $8/month. That's really inexpensive!

Sigh . . . we now pay about $120/month but that includes our college DD who doesn't have another phone and we've eliminated long distance on all phones so the bottom line is not that high.

Good luck.

I have a Tracfone, received "double minutes for life," and no matter how long I talk, it has been the most cost efficient, totaling about 11 cents per minute.

AT&T and Cingular have the Go phone, with two different pay-as-you-go plans, which is slightly different from the Tracfone prepaid.

If it were me, I would look at who he is calling and who they have a plan with. We have Cingular (which there are things I hate about this company) because EVERYONE around her (95% of the people I know) have Cingular and the minutes to another Cingular customer do not count as minutes.... They are Mobile to Mobile min which are free. Our family plan has 850 anytime min. and we ALWAYS have min roll over and my kids spend hours on their phones......
