Birth Order Debate

I was reading the Connect with Kids article on Birth Order this week http://connectwithkids.com/tipsheet/2007/354_oct10/thisweek/071010_birth.shtml and I’ve always wondered how much of this really shows up in families and their children’s traits. I know my brother’s oldest is very competitive, strives to do her best, and has always been pretty responsible. His youngest is more free-spirited, just like the article talks about. I only have one so I don’t know how much it affects him… he does have pretty high expectations of himself, though, and he’s always been pretty responsible. I’d love to hear from parents who have more than two and what they think of birth order and how it affects their kids and the way they parent.

I think our expectations naturally change with experience and this isnt a darn thing we can do about it!
Most new parents, including myself, awaited every new development with anticipation. We couldnt wait for the first to crawl, to walk, to start school. We had him on his feet bragging every chance we had. We worried about nipping things in the bud(he'll have a pacifier in college if we dont stop it now!!!)
By the third, I was practically begging the child to not walk. When he walked, he wouldnt be a baby. I knew now how fast those years went and I had NO interest in encouraging them to go even quicker. And no one in my oldests first grade class came with a pacifier ;)
And, yep, they are affected but I dont believe its about conscious parenting or pigeonholing kids with labels. I think its about our 'growth'
When its time to grandparent, I will be far more like I was with #3 as a parent than I was with #1. Probably times 10 and I am looking forward to it!
