bra question

hey there - i'm new here! i'm mom to a 14 year old daughter.... up until recently she's been somewhat of a tomboy - not that she's into sports but she's always been into video gaming and didn't really have much interest in her clothes and overall look...

to that end- most of her clothes were pretty basic tees and jeans and her bras were almost all jog style - with no real fit or support....

anyway - as she grows older we realize she needs something more - not just for support but also for looks - she's finally wanting to look more like a woman/girl so we set off yesterday for a little bra shopping..

i wear a 36DD - so of course, my knowledge of bras is pretty limited to that size range - so i wasn't sure what to look at for her - and when we went to the store - the only thing i saw were those bras in lots of colors and brands that seem to have formed cups w/padding in them... we ended up buying 2 of them (size 34A) because it seemed that's all there was...

does anyone have more insight into what girls are wearing at this age and bra size? of course, i didn't want to spend a lot of $$ on these either - the ones i got were $15 each and they were buy 2 get 1 free by mail... many other brand name bras were more like $25-$40 each....

thanks so much!

The type of bras you bought are very typically the ones teens are buying. My DD wears the same size as yours and buys these padded bras in all different colors. Even my other DD (12) wears these but in 32A with a little less padding. They seem to like the look this smooth padding gives them. Some come with matching underwear too which is cute. Gone are the days of the 70's and 80's when we smaller chested women wore thin bras with no padding for that carefree look. I like the look now better.

i have to say i like the look too- it gives her a nice shape which is new to both of us...
and it's funny how different clothes fit when you have this nice girly shape under the shirt... she'd just bought some clothes right before we got the bras and she wanted to try one on over the new bra and was shocked at how much looser the shirt was with the new bra - but you know, she's been smooshed w/the jog style bras so ...

well - whatever, it's a new world for us both and it's rather fun for me to live it with her...

thanks for your help!

My daughter just turned 13 and she is flat as a board! I know it bothers her because most of her other friends have boobs. One of her friends buys those padded type 34A bras and wears them to give her a little bit of a chest DD hasnt approached me about doing that yet. What do you think about that idea? Do you think she'll develop soon? I was wearing a bra and was quite top heavy in grade 7 - she has NOTHING yet.

Oh, I need HELP with bra shopping! I just don't have clue. I'm pretty flat chested and can get away with pretty much anything - but my 13 year old daughter is already "bigger" than I am, so I don't know the first thing about getting her proper fitting bras!

Well, I hope she's not like me! I come from a family of quite big-chested women - but I had NOTHING at 13. or 14. and not much mroe after that, either! LOL - I kept waiting for it to come - my mom kept saying I'd be a "late bloomer". Well, I'm still in an A cup, darn it - and my 13 year old daughter has already passed me by far! I have no idea why - genetics are a funny thing, aren't they?

i know it's best to be officially fitted - but anytime i've done that i've ended up with $50 bras and at her age and size - i really didn't want that to happen.. in fact, the last time i was fitted- she was with me and we needed a bra for a wedding... her jogging bras wouldn't work with the dress she was wearing so they gave her a very simple cotton stretch bra - again - it was basically elasticized cotton in the shape of a bra - it was $25 which i though was too much $$ but we needed something and i didn't want to deal w/bra shopping... plus - this was 2 years ago already...

anyway - we just went to macy's and just picked what size i thought she would be ...
i picked 36A but they were too big so we settled on 34A - which fit a lot better...

until she's bigger or has a more serious interest - i'm not going to spend more than $15 on a bra for her and thankfully she's not a brand label person so i don't have to worry about that!

good luck to you -
this whole thing is difficult... she just got her very first boyfriend - hence the interest in clothes and bras..... ugh

I usually lurk, but I recently bought my oldest DD (14) new bras. We had went to pick she and DD#2 up from their dad's this summer. We went to do some shopping in the city near where he lives and I made her try on a couple over her clothes in the undies section of Target. She about died from embarrassment. I reminded her she'd never seen any of the people around her and would never have to see them again. It at least gave me an idea of what size to pick out for her to try on. She's changed bunches since last year. Most of the bras we looked at are those moldy cup style. I don't particularly like them. I found her a couple of cheaper styles, but the nicer ones were $14-15.

When DD was 12 (and really needing/wanting something other than a sports bra for the first time)

Ha, my mom was a bit less "tactful" I suppose -- for me, it was more along the lines of, "you have breasts, you need a bra." End of story, and off to the store we went. I guess I'm a bit suprised that young teen girls find this whole thing "embarassing." I love bras, and shopping for bras -- even with my mom (yes, I still shop for bras with my mom sometimes -- who better to foot the bill for my expensive Victoria's Secret undergarments!). Heck, I remember wanting to be big enough to need a bra, and just dying for the day my mom agreed. In fact, I probably started wearing bras long before I really needed to, just because I wanted to feel more grown up.
