At least, I hope it's a brag...that he's not just simply paying lip service to me!!

Are you in NY or is that child support debit card all over the place? I hate it. I prefer the checks instead. Anyway, on to your son! It's great that he was able to see how dangerous a debit card can be. Do you get a monthly statement that he can view - just to track his spending and perhaps budget the money when he knows he has an upcoming expenditure?

Good for you both!

I do the same thing (not the child support part) but I have given my dd16 a debit card and set up a separate account for her to use for "whatever, whenever". It's an important lesson in how easy it is to spend money.

Congrats to your DS for seeing this and owning up to it. So much better to learn it now, when it's controlled a bit than later when he could so easily get into debt!

Aren't there guidelines that one has to follow?

You know I think this is a great way to teach kids about money and how fast it goes. I may talk to dh about setting something up like this for the kids and have just a small amt in it from us and when they have their own money the can put it in too and draw on it as needed.

Wish I had done something like that a long time ago. Sometimes I think they, especially Kelsie, think we are a money machine.

Boy, is that true! Especially when they come to you at 10pm on a Sunday night and tell you they need some cash for something at school the next day...and you don't have any cash at home. My DS does that all the time. I always tell them I'm not an ATM machine!

Yeah, my DD would pull that w/ me, like she was on the way out w/ friends and said "I don't have any cash, can I borrow $20?"
