Breakfast Suggestions?

It's hard to believe that school will be starting on Monday, but believe it I must. It's gonna happen.
I need help with DD and her breakfast on school days. She has quite a long commute to school and typically eats in the car en route. This is also when she puts on makeup, finishes homework, goes back to sleep, etc. Needless to say, she is not the most organized person in the mornings. I'd really like her to eat more healthily, but need suggestions for a quick, eat-in-the car, breakfast.
She has far too many carbohydrates in her diet and not nearly enough fiber. It is a sad fact that at nearly 15, her eating habits still resemble those of a toddler, and I am running out of ideas and ways to change that. I have come to the conclusion that her issue is with textures, not so much flavors -- the fruit in yogurts is too 'slimy and gross', peanut butter on a bagel sticks to her teeth ... stuff like that.
Last year, we did bagels, toaster waffles, cereal in a tupperware-type container and waaayyy too many Pop-Tarts.
I insist on a daily vitamin and am wondering if I should add a fiber supplement of some sort too. Anybody have any experience with these?
Any other ideas? Thoughts? I know she should be taking care of these things by now, but well ... you know how it is!

It's been ages (check out my roll call post for the scoop). I haven't read the other posts, I'm just jumping in as usual. Dd loves smoothies. They're easy to throw together and very portable. I don't really have a recipe, I just combine whatever fruit I have sitting around (bananas, strawberries, papaya in any combination), plain yogurt, juice or milk, 1 TBL wheat germ, 1 scoop of protein powder and a handful of ice. Sometimes I throw in a scoop of peanut butter. She has one 2-3 times per week. Dd has this insane need for variety, so I have to mix things up to keep her interested.
We also do oatmeal muffins and homemade granola bars (let me know if you want the recipe - I'll post it). I banned pop tarts last year after I finally got around to reading the label. Well, I didn't actually ban them, but I told her I was going to stop buying them for awhile and if she had a hankering to ask and I would buy a box. She hasn't.

Hallelujia! I'm not the only one LOL. So your doctor actually said that about the textures? I came to the conclusion on my own, but thought my DD was just weird. When your DD was younger, did you get a lot of grief from family and friends about her eating habits, too? My family (both sides) STILL make comments about it to me about what she should be eating, what I'm doing wrong, blah, blah, blah. It's a bit annoying but I've learned to turn a deaf ear anymore.

We make smoothies here for a quick breakfast, also a good way to use up very ripe bananas. I get the protein powder at Henry's, the brand is Jay Robb's Egg White Protein in Vanilla flavor. It is delicious! It is kind of expensive, about $20 for a 1-pound jar which is 15 scoops/servings. But that is 24 gr protein, no sugars and 1 carb so IMO it is worth it if the kid will eat it! They have a website (jayrobb.com) also they are based in Carlsbad so maybe you can somehow get it cheaper direct?
Dd went through a bagels phase which was an easy breakfast on the go. I got those individual servings of cream cheese in foil and she took a sliced toasted bagel and a packet of cream cheese and a plastic knife in a slider-top bag, if she didn't finish it in the car it was easy to eat out of hand between classes.
I agree about the "textures" thing...my dd was like that, still is to a lesser degree at 20yo but it has improved as she has gotten older. I noticed that when she got out on her own some of the pickiness lessened, maybe her friends gave her a hard time or when she was cooking for herself she decided that she needed to be more flexible? Hope that your dd grows out of it sooner than mine...
Yep, the Dr actually told me about the texture issue. He also told me that he saw it quite often. He told me to keep trying new things and even occasionally going and trying things that she had said no to before. I try not to make food an issue besides making sure what she does eat is healthy. I have a sister and a niece that both suffer from anorexia and I don't want to go there !
Yes, I still get grief whenever we go out to eat with family members or have holiday dinners together. Just this past Father's Day we had a get together at my parent's house and I was asked what my daughter would eat (asked in a sarcastic tone)
I was glad to see your post also because I always worry that she is the only teen to eat like this.
I was a picky eater as a kid and have pretty much grown out of it...except that I still cannot stand onions and avoid them if at all possible LOL So I feel there is hope for my DD.

Thanks for the suggestion! We have a Henry's here too, so I'll scoot on down there tomorrow to get some. We tried a smoothie experiment this morning with mango, peach and a Yoplait strawberry yogurt. DD thought the strawberry overpowered the other flavors, so maybe next time we'll only use 1/2 a tub.
