Ds almost 19 has moved out with a friend...however the house they have moved into is a horrid nightmare!! It is absolutely dilapidated for lack of a better word. To the point of a few broken windows that need to be replaced. Ds says they got a great deal because they get the first two months rent free and then after that it will only be $150 per person per month. No appliances, and it took them a couple of days just to clean up the mess that was inside since it was empty for two years. To be honest, I worry about the safety of the house...the wiring, what if it catches fire?!!?

I would tell him, "Well, now you see that $150/month buys you HALF the rent on a dunghole.

Some kids just seem to have to do everything the hard way, don't they? While I wouldn't keep offering to buy him things for the aparment since he seems to be detrmined to live like this I don't think buying a couple smoke detectors would be over the line. He may be making stupid coices that he'll likely have to suffer the consequences from. But you certainly don't want to stand by while he risks his life just to prove your point! Is he working and does he have a plan and budget for rent/groceries/etc.?

Quite honestly, one man's "horrid nightmare" is another man's "castle."

I would walk in with the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector(complete with batteries) and a smile on your face. Find the best place to put them and just do it in a calm, non-judgmental manner. Do not say anything negative.

If questioned, say you are entitled to sleep at night without worrying about your baby

I do understand your point that in third world countries people are living in huts, but this is the US and landlords are responsible to have buildings up to a certain standard that complies w/ the state building codes and they also need to have an occupancy permit.

I'm not anti-building standards/codes or anything like that... but I guess I'm super-soured on the whole housing issue after what I've listened to at work for the last 4-5 months.
