Calling All Readers!

Tue, 08-29-2006 - 11:51am

In the 'Polls' folder below, there are often threads and discussions on books we are reading, have read or want to read and I've noticed that a lot of us who post here have similar tastes, interests and opinions in literature. Well, maybe not opinions but that's what makes the discussion interesting!

Sue (ljd_mom), Amelia (willow54sunset) and me (hydrangea_blue) think it would be fun and interesting to start a book discussion thread here. (I know there is actually an iVillage Book Discussions board, but we thought it would be more fun to do this with people we already 'know' :-))

We've decided on "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards as our first novel. Only Sue currently has the book in her possession, so the rest of us are going to get it bought and get started reading this week.

Anybody else interested? Please feel free to join us in this! Look for the thread later this week or next -- It'll be called "Memory Keeper" or something similar.

Hope to see you all down below!

Julie

Way to go, Julie! I nominate you to be our "facilitator" of the thread that will be started below. I have never done a book discussion "on-line" before, so go ahead and do it anyway you want. Just for the record, I went and bought the book during my lunch hour this afternoon. And, I am intrigued!!

Thanks for getting this started!

Well ... thanks for the vote of confidence, but I've never participated in a book discussion in any form, ever! So, we may have to share facilitating duties and sort of work them all out as we go. I'm sure Sue will have some good ideas about how to do this too.

I'm off to get my copy of the book sometime today!

Yay - I'm ready to go! I just finished "The Stranger" (now *that's* a book for a discussion group), so I'll start Memory Keeper tonight or tomorrow.

See ya "down below" lolol

Hi Sue,

I started reading this book last night and made it to chapter 3. So far, I am enjoying it. I noticed that there are discussion questions at the back of the book, so maybe that will get us going "down below". What do you and Julie think? BTW, I hope some others from this board will join in, too. That will make it all the more interesting!

Amelia

P.S. It is 3 A.M. and I'm having a hard time sleeping - waaah! ;-)

OMG, Julie! I just--as in about three days ago--finished this book! It's not the kind of novel I'd ever pick up, but a friend recommended it and I loved it!

I'll probably pop into the book thread just to see what the rest of you think of it.

I read up until Chapter 4 last night, but I'll save my thoughts for the 'discussion' thread! Probably we should wait until Sue has a chance to get some reading in before we start that.

I flipped through the back of the book, but didn't notice the dicussion questions. Since you have some experience with discussion groups, what do you feel usually works best? Just general questions or actually using the suggested ones?

In the paperback that I have, a reader's guide begins after page 401. The questions begin on page 11 of the reader's guide, and I think they are pretty thought provoking. I also noticed that the book is divided into 7 periods of times: 1964, 1965, 1970, 1977, 1982, 1988, and 1989. How about we all read up to 1965 (page 71) and then we can stop and discuss? Or would you and Sue (and anyone else) prefer to read the entire book and then discuss it as a whole?

I like the idea of working in sections and page 71 sounds like a good first stopping point to me!

I'm open to any format/questions for the discussion part.

Hi Julie,

I would love to join the online book club. I belong to one that meets every other month, and then have been asked to join another one, but frankly I would rather try this online thing first. Although, one of the best things about book club night are the munchies. What are you planning on e-serving? LOL. Have you scheduled a date for when we should all be done with the book? I suggest to give us at least 3 weeks, as everyone reads at a different pace.

I don't even have it yet but would like to add that I did see it at Target, so it should be fairly inexpensive to pick up.

Marie
