That's great news. I think I've read that for ADD if they find something they click with, sometimes it's hard to tear them away. That's definitely true for my ds14 as well (not diagnosed but I still wonder at times). He clicked with Romeo and Juliet - did fine on the tests, but not so hot on the essay they had to do, but he's never liked to write! And he's got a future test and essay in Farewell to Manzanar...fingers crossed on both because I'm not convinced he likes that book!
But I definitely would celebrate the small victories - congrats to your ds.
Sometimes, it just takes the right book! DS didn't care at all for reading until his reading skills were good enough to tackle the Harry Potter books. Once he found a genre he loved, he started reading a whole lot more.
Woo hoo for that son of yours!! I'm impressed!! Whoever said that ADD/LD kids can do very well when they've got a subject they like is so right. DS J - VERY ADHD/LD - barely graduated hs, but took AP History and got As in it, because he is the original history buff. He'll read anything he can get his hands on when it comes to history and politics - and as an 8th grader his social studies teacher told me he had a better handle on the political process in the US than most adults he knew. Same kid never did pass algebra.
Hope your son keeps showing this side of himself, what a confidence booster it must be! Rose
