When did your child get the high school class rings or when will they be allowed to get it?

I got mine my junior year. My ex husband is giving my freshman daughter her ring for Christmas this year. I think it is too early to spend that kind of money.

What do you guys think?

I think it depends---I didn't get a class ring, but most of my classmates that did, got one later in high school, but if your ex is willing to shell out the money and take care of it now, then I don't see a reason why it isn't acceptable...........

We have the same question about letter jackets................when do kids get them? My freshman says he doesn't want one now, but the store that sells them tells me that most freshman boys in athletics get one............not as expensive as class rings, but more expensive than our budget will allow at a moments notice----

I think if your daughter can enjoy a class ring her entire high school career, then it will be a very nice gift.

He's feighning financial difficulties yet gets her a ring, my son gets jipped in the process. My XH wants DS to be in band yet wont' pony up the half is should pay to have him in band, including buying half of the mandatory instrument. I had to put it on my CC to pay for his instrument. Now we are fighting and nitpicking over money issues.

UGH, I hate having to have a relationship with that man, but that's another message, board, planet, lol!

Any more opinions, just for curiosity sake?

Oh My Goodness! My dd is a Senior and I STILL haven't gotten her ring!! Yikes, maybe that would be a good Christmas or 18th B'day gift.

Personally, I think it's great. Most people don't wear them much beyond high school anyway - why not let her enjoy it? The only concern might be - will she loose it? But if she's pretty responsible, I think it's a great idea.

My high school didn't even allow freshman or sophmores to buy class rings -- had to wait til end of junior or senior year. I saw a class ring sign up at DD's high school directed toward seniors, last week or week before.

I didn't even buy a ring because I knew I wouldn't wear it. Most class rings don't get worn much beyond high school anyway, so I couldn't justify the expense. But if your DD WILL wear it, why not? She'll have the better part of 4 years to do so and enjoy it. Why not get the most out of the purchase?

Oh ... just had a thought ... if your XH buys the ring this year, will it still fit when DD's a senior? I think kids still grow a bit between freshman and senior year.

I don't know if either of my kids will want class rings but I'd much rather buy a really nice birthstone or signet ring instead of the class one. I think they'd get much more mileage out of something like that.

Hello, MOM, get on the stick, why don't you? It used to be the rings were ordered senior year, and you got them in the spring; but now our school orders them in the fall of junior year and they get them sometime in February, I think--can't remember.

I like it the old way better, and I think it would make an excellent present for Xmas or birthday. The kids don't have anything to look forward to in being a senior anymore, what with limos and fancy hairdos for homecoming in 9th grade, etc.

Senior year is turning out to be such a HUGE expense, what, with application fees, SAT's, class rings, yearbook photos, yearbook costs, etc. My goodness, by the time she's a Freshman in College, I'm going to be broke! LOL

They get them as juniors at dd's school. There is a big ceremony where the rings are presented and the entire school attends with parents and teachers present.
