Cute story.. about leaving for college

Recently, me, DH and DS flew to Nebraska for a college visit. On the flight home, the plane was pretty empty. DS sat alone... with his long legs spread across the entire seating area... snoozing and listening to his IPOD. Me and DH sat a row up and across the aisle. A young mother needed to change her baby's diaper. The 3 seats infront of DS were open... so she layed the baby there and proceeded to change her. I was looking at my DS... who now seems so grown up... and at the little baby... having flashbacks of where all the years had gone... and soon I was sobbing. I just couldn't stop. The young Mom looks at me and says "Do you want me to change my baby somewhere else?" I explained that I was just emotional about my son leaving for school. I told her we were returning from a college visit. She looked dead-serious at me and said "Oh, I sorry... Didn't you like the school?" I couldn't help but smile! Where DOES the time go?

I can see many mothers getting emotional in the same situation -- me included! Even though I have really enjoyed my children at every stage of their lives, I do get wistful for the 'toddler' years, when they were just so darn cute!
Best wishes to you (and your DS too) as you get ready for this next stage in your lives.

Some days I just can't wait for my DD to go away to college, although I know I will miss her too. The thing is that the schools she has applied to are no more than 2 hrs. from home. I don't know if I could handle her going really far away where I couldn't see her until Thanksgiving. My cousins are living in Nebraska and their 2nd DD went to UMass and couldn't come home until Christmas. At least she had relatives back east, so it wasn't that she was totally on her own.
I think my DS will have a harder time seeing his big sister going to college. He has already mentioned how much he will miss her. He said that he missed her so much when she went to camp for a week, he doesn't know how he can stand it. I think that's cute. Of course, I might be crying when I actually have to drop her off.
I can't believe she is going to be 18 in less than 2 months. I was talking w/ my mother about her going to one of the Indian casinos recently and my DSd asked "do you have to be 18 to gamble?" Then I realized that was another thing my DD could do by herself, not that she's likely to. Her big thing will be that she can legally drive after midnight. Oh joy for me!
