DD admitted food problem

Last night DD and I had a breakdown/breakthrough - both of us crying. It was one of those weird things that what triggered it was nothing, but all of a sudden all my worries just came flying out. I thought she was going to just blow me off, or dismiss me as over-reacting and crying for nothing. But then (we moved into the bedroom, away from DS and TV), she sat quietly for a while. Then she burst into tears and said "you're right about everything". She says that since she lost some weight over the summer everyone keeps telling her how pretty she is, how thin she is, and the boys say she's so hot. She says, that's addicting, how could I do something (eat more) that would make people stop saying that? We talked for a while - and I told her that I DON'T want her to gain weight, but I DO want her to eat foods with a broader nutrition base. I asked her to just add protein at lunch and dinner, and that I was sure by doing that she wouldn't gain weight.

We both calmed down a little, and then DH came home. She didn't want him to see her crying, and I know I can't have this conversation with him in front of her, so we pulled ourselves together and went in to eat dinner.

I know it's just the beginning, but I feel like she was honest with me (about this) for the first time in months. FWIW, she took her vitamins this morning (another of the things I want her to do) and put a little cheese on her english muffin this morning.

I would imagine that the fear of gaining that weight back would be scary for her.

I'm glad your dd talked to you about her eating and how she's feeling.

Thanks to all for your supportive comments. I know this is just one small step - especially having followed what Pam has gone through with Jason - but at least we've put it out in the open.

I'd love any suggestions on how to talk to my DH about this - he totally disagrees with me, says she's just "lean and athletic" and that she has too much energy to be anorexic. Daddio, I'm glad to see you on this thread - do you have a dad's perspective on girls and eating?

I agree that the statement about 'having too much energy to be anorexic' is wrong.
