DD and Homecoming

OMG, DD PMS'ed herself into a real crab yesterday before homecoming. She grumbled and groused the entire day about how much she didn't want to go and she very nearly didn't! She passed on the Homecoming game alotgether, and just ended up at the dance. This is too funny (to me) not to share ...

DD, before the dance: I just don't feel like the same person this year. I don't want to be bothered at all with any of this. Maybe I AM depressed. I just don't know what is wrong with me! Now mom, don't go and get yourself worked up and worry about me all night.

Me: I'm not worried at all. I'm going to drop you off at the dance and you're going to go in and have a great time!

Before: I really don't want to go to this dance. I'm only going because I promised F and K I would.

After: Once we got inside, I didn't see F and K hardly at all! I was too busy.

Before: I can't believe the dance is in the GYM! This is going to be so LAME!

After: OMG! The gym looked so awesome! It was a jungle theme and there were tables all covered in different shades of green tablesclothes with birds of paradise plants as centerpieces and there was a steam machine thing that kept setting the smoke alarms off, but they finally figured out what was wrong ... even the bathrooms were decorated like a jungle! It was so cool!

Before: I'm probably not even dressed right. I feel fat and ugly and boring.

After: I can't believe how many people almost didn't recognize me! They all said I looked so pretty!

Before: I'm probably not even going to dance very much, probably not at all. The dj will probably only play rap music and everyone will be dirty and freak dancing and I'll just be standing around.

After: OMG my feet hurt so bad! I danced almost the entire night! It was so fun! The dj played The Macarena, The Electric Slide and 'Shout'! I even got M (gf) out on the dance floor! And you should see M (guy friend) from my Religion class dance! He knows all the moves to the 'Greased Lightening" song! Just like in the movie.

Before: I hope the food is good, that's probably all I'm going to do. Eat and play blackjack in the 'casino'.

After: Can we stop for something to eat? I'm STARVING! I only ate two cookies the whole night.

Casino? Oh, I really don't know, I didn't go in at all.

Before: We're locked in until 10:00. I'll probably be ready to go right about then.

After: 10:45pm. That was probably the funnest dance I've ever been to!

Me: Teenagers. Egad.

Possibly ... though the correlation between high school football and teen pregnancy seems to be one that is more an issue in California schools than other parts of the country. You're probably okay ... but you might want to keep an eye on those reclining seats, just in case ... lol

Thanks for the smiles, all!

We didn't have quite the drama Saturday, but ds14(freshman) didn't know he had to get tickets in advance to go to the game, so he and his buddies missed out on that (when the school talked about last minute tickets, they thought it was for the dance, which they were prepared for). So he, too, missed the game (and we lost miserably so it's just as well).

But he and a few buddies did go to the dance after MUCH trepidation. He said most were in suits (as was he - his reaction to wearing a suit for the first time - he's standing there, trying it on, arms straight down almost at his sides, and says, "Am I going to die soon?") but a few had jeans on. When we (quickly) dropped him off (didn't want to embarrass him, yanno), we did see one kid in a suit and white leather gym shoes trimmed in bright green.

No, he and his buddies didn't dance. But they did stay the whole time. The DJ played all rap; ds hates rap. He was going to ask a girl he knows to dance but his phone rang - I got yelled at later for that, but it wasn't me - I'd NEVER think to call him during an event!! But they got to socialize and had fun (I have no clue if there were decorations or food; he doesn't go into such specifics; only specific we got was they found a place they could sneak outside a bit and had a tennis ball and played 'wall ball' (a game they made up a couple of years ago) but some guys came out to smoke, so they left pretty much after that as they don't like the smell).

So in a way he actually listened to me - go, dance if you want; make fun of others dancing if you want, make fun of their outfits, the music, etc. - call us if it's 'boring' and you want to get picked up early...and then decide next year if you want to do it again. But at least give it a try. And they did - and actually admitted to having fun.

Funny, you are describing my dd14 as well. Funny that two girls that began their lives so similarly turned out so differently. I was also a colicky baby according to my mom,and I know I was a rebellious teen. Oh, well guess it's payback!

It was just last week that I told DD she was the infant from h**l. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but she was pretty much the infant, toddler and pre-schooler from h**l, too. Oh ... do I have stories about her! She was the one I walked the floors with, who I'd drag out by the feet from under the kitchen table and carry kicking and screaming to her room, drop her on the bed and leave the room. I think she lived her teenage years early. Once upon a time, she was being a little cheekier than I felt appropriate and told her so. I remember her standing there, with one hand on her hip and that hip was stuck out to the side in a real 'attitude' pose and she said "You know don't you mom, that I'm turning into a teenager!" She was SEVEN at the time.

DS on the other hand, was a dream baby. He didn't so much cry as he fussed. He slept from 6:30pm to 5:30am by 4 weeks. I could set him or lay him down and he would be very content wherever he was. He was such a sweet baby and little boy and for the most part, still is. It is with increasing frequency, however, that I am seeing glimpses of what is in store for me in these teenage years that are soon to come ... not so sweet.

You just never know what these creatures will grow into ...

My easiest baby was my worst teen-well, so far :)

Really glad she had a good time-that conversation cracked me up!

I need to try this next year. I think I back off too easily but DS3 needs to get out there and try some things-like you told M, if you dont like it, you know not to go next year!

Hydrangea, thanks for this wonderful post. Like the other posters, it was a great reminder to me to step back and enjoy some of the comedy!
