OMG...some people are such control freaks! If he's just having a bad day, or if, in his mind, the kid isn't an angel he thinks he has the right to insult her anyway he chooses? It's disgusting that someone like that is in our schools setting bad examples for our children. I'd complain to the principal about it, and then the superintendent and the school board.

Actually, I have seen that rule printed out in the paperwork teachers give in the beginning of the year as the rules of their class-it's THEIR time and you are not to do other classwork

I know it sounds silly in the example given but I believe the rule exists for the more typical 'oops-forgot to do my math-I'll do it now during English-these lectures are such a bore anyhow' and student proceeds to ignore the teacher, class discussion and do the homework for another class

I think teacher could have looked the other way under the circemstances but he may have his reasons.

Personally, Id either let it go or approach him 'gently' asking for his version of the story.

I'll play devil's advocate since I'm a high school teacher - I must confess that it makes me crazy when I catch kids studying or doing homework for other classes when in my class! This happens sometimes when they DO have an assignment to work on, but choose to scramble to do their math homework for next block instead so they can avoid a detention - and then they'll tell me "it's okay, I'll just do the Social Studies for homework". To me, what they are saying is "Math (or whatever) is more important than THIS class." I think it is very important that for the 80 minutes they are in my class they are focused completely on that subject. Obviously, if this girl really WAS all caught up in the ASL class and doing really well for grades, then I think the teacher was being unreasonable. I just wonder if maybe she isn't doing so well in his class that he felt she might benefit from a little more studying!

LOL - I didn't read your message until after I posted mine. I got a real chuckly out of how close your example was to my actual experience. WHY is it always Math? and WHY do they always try to do it in either English or Social? ROTFL
