Do your teens avoid you like the plague?

I know this is normal to some degree, but my almost 18 yr. old seems to have just taken it too far.

When they get older they start developing other friends and interests.

It really hurts when they avoid you, doesn't it? I try to take ques from my daughter's behavior. If she doesn't want to talk or is in a bad mood, I let it go. I stop talking too. I'm still nice and act like it doesn't bother me (this took some practice). She always comes around, however, she's only 15.

My teens are still OK with sitting together to eat dinner and such, but, so busy we don't see them much at all.

Ramona  Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!

Well my 16 yr old is not like this at all but of course he still needs me to drive him places.

Mine was like that in 9th grade, when he was having very real problems with depression.

DS19 was like that senior year. He got up after we left, never brought friends over, left as soon as dinner was over (weekends only; we didn't let him out during the week unless it was school related as he also worked), got home on weekends after we were asleep.... Now that he's a soph in college (living about 10 miles away), he's home more than he was when he spent the night at home! At least as far as waking hours go, he'll pop over for a couple hours on the weekend, and 1/2 hour during the week, and wants to talk and catch up during that time. I think part of it in his case was this incredible drive to be 'independent' and now that he knows he CAN be, he's just back to being more of himself and wanting to know what's going on.
