My dd text messages all the time. She pays for her phone service which is on our acct. and so does ds. She ended up signing up for a deal a few months ago for 500 texts/mo and then went over by 365 which cost 10 cents each, so she had to pay for those that month. The next month it just happened that both of them were up for new phones and really needed them and dh signed up for unlimited text messaging for the whole family. What a relief!

I'm wondering how many text messages your kids use each month. We just got the bill a week or so ago and it itemizes all calls etc. Her total for the month was over 3000 text messages. I have never seen anyone text like her, I think she can text as fast as I can type.

How many do your kids send per month?

I'm in the same camp as you. I do a fair amount of texting myself but primarily to my daughter. I actually like it and it does give her some privacy when she's need to talk to me when she's out with her friends. I think she more willing to talk to me thru texts when she's with her friends 'cause it's private and they won't be listening in. We also talk on the phone too but I do think that texting is a nice feature.

Our kids have "pay as you go" cellphones, so they can't go past what money THEY put on. And it's not a bad deal here - unlimited texting is $10.00 per month - so usually they put about $25.00 on their phone, and that gives them the unlimited texting plu $15.00 for calls. DD rarely ever texts - DS rarely uses the phone unless he's calling me, but averages about 800 texts per month! And I've noticed the kids in school will actually try to get away with texting each other in the same class - just one or two words per text! LOL - what a waste. IF I text, which is rare, I pay 15 cents per, so I'm a little more economical in the way I use it. But heck - I'd save a ton of money anyway, since it takes me about 5 minutes to write one short text message - I HATE it!! :-)

HI,I just read your post and immediatly had to reply. My dd is the queen of texting! Her last month's tally was 7821 text messages!! Yes that is seven THOUSAND!!! I changed her plan so she now has unlimited, that way we don't get a suprise bill of $$$. With the family plan the cost was only an additional $10.00/mo. I use it to stay in touch with her too, it is very convenient. Our family too has restrictions on where and when she can text. Obviously when school starts again she won't be allowed the same amount of freedom. Anyway, thought you would get a kick out this.

Take care,

My daughter LOVES to text. We had to get unlimited because each month we were paying a lot more than the set amount. Its especially worse during the school year when Madison's boyfriend is away at college. When they aren't talking to eachother vocally over the phone they are texting. There are rules for the school year, but it does not really make a difference in the bill because she just gets it all in before.

I thought I let you know that you are not alone. My dd's best friend was texting all the time her and her family were on vacation out West this summer (we live on the East Coast) and because the calls were roaming and she was texting her boyfriend who is on a different carrier, the bill came back $600 over for the month! Wowza!!! I guess her phone has been taken away for a looooong time. I ended up getting my dd the unlimited texting plan so we don't get any surprise bills.
