Good for him! I had one (Jason) that was involved in a lot of things; Justin started out in a lot but by the end of high school he was only in church youth group. It is good for them, not only for college apps but just to keep them busy and expose them to more people/opportunities.
This is very encouraging. My son is in 9th grade and is slow to join stuff. So far, he does band and ultimate frisbee, but we had to twist his arm to get him to sign up for that. I'm hoping he'll take more risks next year.
So, how many GIRLS are in the play??? Jimmy Buffett once said that's what motivated him to join his college CHEERLEADING! Seriously tho, it's great that he's taking more initiative. It does usually take boys a little longer to get their feet under them, and it often begins when (YES) they are interested in a girl, or their friends join something. Whatever works.
I'm guessing that some of this self confidence is due to looking better too--he got his braces late compared to other kids so he just got them off at the beginning of this school year.
Those are great things to be involved in.
Although my DS has been active in track, cross country and a few clubs at school, he surprised the heck out of us and tried out for the school play.

It's more that his friends are joining the things he wants to do with him--and his BFF is a girl.
