DS and soccer

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback and their .02 on DS and his big decision to make regarding his surgery and senior soccer season. Here is what we've come up with:

DS17 is home from Europe (yay!) and met last night with the HS soccer coach. I had drawn up a calendar for them with his estimated rehab schedule (from a list his surgeon gave us at the last appt) and the soccer team schedule both on it. The coach definitely wants him on the team and has offered to roster him as "Inactive Varsity". While he is rehabbing his injury he is to report to all practices, check in, then go to the weightroom in the school and do whatever specified workout he is allowed to do according to the surgeon. If he finishes before practice is over he can do paperwork, etc for the coach. During games he will assist the coach by keeping the stat book and might run the scoreboard for home games. As soon as he is released by the doctor and "match fit" he will be activated for Varsity play. Looks like if all goes well he should make the last 8-9 games and of course the state tournament at the end of the season.

We briefly discussed postponing surgery and spoke with his surgeons assistant about it. (the assistant is a licensed physicians asst and athletic trainer) He recommended against postponing because while he wouldn't further injure his foot, he could build more scar tissue around the nerve making surgery a little more difficult, plus there is the risk of favoring the injured area and weakening surrounding support structures like his ankle. DS also decided he just didn't want to play in pain and not be the best player he can be- why be out there if he can't perform at 100% or close to it? I'm not sure he will reach 100% by season's end, but he will come close.

The coach flagged me down later when I went to pick DD14 up at her practice. He is really excited to get DS back on the team. I thanked him for offering to accomodate DS with his injury- he is cutting 38 boys from this team but basically holding a spot for DS. He feels that by having him on administrative duty and working on the sidelines it is easier to justify rostering him and holding his spot. I understand that, there are going to be some kids who have been in the program for a couple years cut and they're going to be upset as will their parents. He is trying to "clean house" a little and get rid of some attitude problems that are holdovers from our previous lousy coach. I hope this all works out and he can start rebuilding our program. Even though DS is a senior I'd like to see our school team back it's former stature and "glory days".

I think that's an excellent approach and is basically the way DD wound up after her shoulder surgery. She had to attend all practices. She did her PT exercises while the others were warming up (throwing, catching, etc.). She ran the bases with the rest of them and did what she could. During games, she sat the bench and kept the books. The coach was adamant that she not miss any games - not even for her dr appts. She felt it was crucial for team unity that DD be present during all games.

I'm glad this has worked out well and wish DS well during his surgery and rehab period.

I'm happy to hear that all has worked out for your DS and the soccer team. I haven't been around for a while and am now catching up with the board.

I wish your DS well and I hope his team has a successful season. Hmmm, unless of course his school plays against our school and then I hope our season is more successful. LOL

Mily :)
