Check your insurance plan documents - it should be pretty easy to figure out who are considered covered dependents.

Our plan covers dependents until age 20 and then to age 23 if they are F/T students. When my DD turned 20, we had to provide documentation that she was enrolled in school to continue her coverage.

Hi Marie. From what I can gather from my own *very* minor experience with this, is that it mostly depends on your insurance itself. My insurance at work will cover a dependent until the age of 21, I think (I know it's over 18) regardless if they are in school or not. The insurance at their step-mom's work required that they be registered as a full-time student to be covered. That insurance requires, I believe, a load of 12 hours/semester to be considered full time, during the course of a regular year. Summer school is not required. I'm not 100% sure, but I *think* both insurance companies will drop coverage at the age of 25, regardless of student status--but, like I said, I don't *know* this for sure.

I personally detest trying to talk to insurance companies directly, so I would start with your dh's workplace--whomever is in charge of the insurance. They should have all the information available for your specific policy. Truly, your dh should also have this info in his insurance package, but if he's anything like me, heaven only knows where that is. ;)

Happy Labor Day to you too! :)

I would guess it would depend on your insurance...ours is that they will be covered until age 22 and or if they are a full time student :) Is he still in high school? I don't think that 18 is the magic cut off with most insurance, I think it has more to do with if they are dependents and still in school :) Good luck,

Julie

I know 12 units is full time

I never had to 'prove' anything until they were in college so Im guessing it's 19
I agree to check your policy for specifics though

Also check your local hospitals charity plan. Ours here is pretty generous-

When my oldest didnt have insurance, I didnt worry about the big stuff-honestly, the hospital would cover a surgery. Its the routine visits-just wanting to see if that virus is something else that worried me. Also medication costs

Go ahead and research it all at once now is my advice! I know how worrisome this can be

Insurance companies are so diverse that you have to check it out with either them or with the Human Resource person at work. I was just discussing this with my SIL yesterday and my nephew was just dropped from their plan as he turned 25 yesterday, he wasn't in school, so with her plan it didn't matter at all.
You never know with insurance companies.

I think everyone else is right - it depends on your insurance company but most insurance that I've heard of covers a child until age 19 (since many kids are 19 when they graduate h.s.) and continues to cover them for 4-5 more years as long as they are a full time student.
