Earnings over the summer?

What does you 16 or 17 year old earn over the summer per hour for their summer job? I will be paying our sitter $8.50/hr cash. My kids are older, it's an easy job. We live right by the neighborhood pool and she will be spending time there. Also, I'm hoping she comes back next summer. What kind of raises do teens expect?

Thanks

My dd (14) is still a bit young for the regular job market and we never had a summer sitter, but I am amazed at what she is paid just for regular babysitting. She watched three kids last night from 4:30 until 10:00 and came home with $50! We used to pay our teen babysitter about $2 an hour! I'll be interested to hear what some of the posters of older teens have to say...

16DD just got a job at Dunkin Donuts! I am soooo happy because it's on the bus route home from school and near our house, so she can work all summer. Her goal is to save money for a car.

18DD works PT (20 hours) at a local daycare. In the summer, she will go full time to save money towards college. She is lucky enough that her college won't start till October so she will have any extra 2 months to save. Yeah!

My 16 year old does babysit and she earns $8 per hour. My 23 year also babysits and she earns between $10 and $15 per hour.

My 16 year old has also had a couple of jobs. I used to work in a college bookstore and they hired her on also. She earned minimum wage, working over the summer, and during school breaks. Now she works Wednesdays and Sundays in the relgious school program as a teachers aide. This of course will give her the summer off.

Though not paid for it, the last few summers, my now 16 year old has been a CIT at various camps in town. She's also been a volunteer at the preschool she once attended. (she has gotten babysitting jobs from this)

Do you all think I should pay her more? She will be working all summer for me from 7:30 to 2:30 each day. As I said, it's a laid back job and my kids are 9 and 12 yr. old boys. Last summer she worked 2 weeks and I paid her $300/wk. Basically, that comes out to $8.58 per hour. In the evenings, I typically pay my sitters $10/hr because they are giving up their social time to sit for my kids. However, during the day I am trying to be competitive with what she would earn if she found another summer job, ie. lifeguarding, store clerk, fast-food work, etc. I just don't know what teenagers earn these days. I wouldn't mind paying her a little more to keep her. Do you think $325/week would be more appropriate. She also needs to remember that she's not having taxes being taken out.

Basically, the $8.50/hr is equal to $11.40 before taxes. That's what I'm trying to find out. Do stores, etc pay $11.40/hr or more?

Thanks

I live in CA. I have found that often prices for many things are higher here. My 16 year old will babysit for $8 an hour. My 23 year old will not. You are offering quite a few hours per week, so I personally think the rate you are paying is fair.

You know what my daughter loves? One of the folks she babysits for gives her money to order pizza occasionally. They always tell her to order a large and enjoy. The kids eat about 4 slices (2 each) and my daughter loves eating 4 or 5 slices. That pizza means more to her than the money LOL. So, maybe instead of more money, as a thank you, you could at the end of the summer give her a gift certificate for pizza, or Starbucks???

My two cents,

Audrey :)

I think that's very generous!

I think it's generous, too. I just checked our job postings at the place where I work and there are LOTS of jobs in the $8.00 to $10.00 range. And these are jobs for adults who NEED to make a living! My dd just interviewed for a summer concession stand job and it will pay $5.50 per hour. I guess it just depends on what section of the country you live in, huh?

Thanks everyone. I do feel better about what I will pay her. I really want her to come back next summer, so I want to make this job teeny more tempting. I think I'll pay her $325 week or $65/day. I think I'll also let her take the kids to lunch at Pizza Hut once a week for a treat. Perhaps a couple times thruout the summer I'll let her take them bowling or to a movie. Of course, I'll pay for her. Hopefully, she'll remember these little extras and want to come back next summer (next summer will be her last before college). She is such a responsible sweety! I'm really looking forward to this summer.

Hi Pam! It is so expensive. However, if I had them in daycamp, the amount would be $450/week. However, with my FSA account at work, it would only be 75% of that or $337/week. I guess it basically comes out the same, but there is something about them just being home. My concern is that she will get bored with this job and not want to do it next year. It's not as if she has other kids to talk to or hang with while they are doing a job.

$25/day, eh? Those were the days, although it probably seemed like alot back then at the time. Talk soon.

I think $325-$350 would be a GREAT offer. Minimum wage is $5.50 (nationally) and up to $7.00 in some states. However, I think, as we all know, minimum wage is not really a liveable wage.
