My almost 12 year old got his braces last month, and his 15 year old brother currently has a palate expander, preparatory to getting his braces in a few months.

In the dental department at the grocery store you can buy teeny tiny brushes (almost like toothpicks) he can use to get into the hard to reach spaces and clean them out. Also, a good flouride mouth rinse will help as well. In fact, if he use the rinse, just swishing water around in his mouth vigorously will usually dislodge any foodstuffs from those tight places. Definitely get those little bristled toothpick things. They saved both my dds' from having plaque loaded teeth and infected gums while they wore their braces.

My 18dd had the expander thing for about 10 months and her whole braces experience was pretty tame.

However, my 20dd had this thing called the Herbst Appliance - what a nightmare that things was. It was this major hardward that was attached to her four rear molars and it attached both the upper and lower set of teeth through a piston-type of mechanism. The whole point of this apparatus was to bring her lower jaw forward to correct an overbite. She had to keep it

My son, Chris, who has the palate expander now, is going to have to have the surgery to move his lower jaw forward.
