I don't think I have talked about this before so I will give you a quick run down on the problem. Kelsie, my 17 yo dd, has a terrible time sleeping. She can't get to sleep easily, doesn't wake easily and is tired most of the time. We went to her dr. who ordered a sleep study and told her that he also wants her to go for counseling to learn how to deal with stress. She has quite a time with stress related to school, especilly tests.

We went for her sleep study while she was off school for the summer and we just had the appointment today to find out the results. I love this doctor, she is young and had an instant rapport with both of us. She was very down to earth and although she didn't speak down to either of us she was very clear in what she was saying.

Come to find out Kelsie takes after Mommy, she has sleep apnea. I didn't think for a minute that this is what she would say. She really doesn't have a lot of symptoms, no major snoring, she doesn't have the cessation of breathing like is usual, and rather than falling asleep all the time she has a hard time getting to sleep.

The test showed that she had a lot of disturbance in her sleep and very very little REM sleep, which is the deep sleep where you get your real rest. It also showed that it took her a long time to get to sleep. The Dr. said it is a moderate to severe case of sleep apnea, if this was my study she would have said it was a moderate cast, but for some one her age it was mod to severe.

As for treatment, she said that although they aren't horrible we should get Kelsie's tonsils and adnoids removed. They are very "bulky" and are obstructing some of her airway which because she isn't a large person anyway, is on the small side.

Glad to hear you're beginning to find an answer to your DD's sleep problems. I hope the surgery provides the relief she needs.

My youngest ds had sleep apnea when he was around 3 or 4, but taking out his gigantic tonsils and adenoids stopped that.
