What to get a 14 yr old boy (his 14th birthday)? There are budgetary constraints---absolutely no more than $75, but would prefer around $50 range...
This is my youngest son, and he's SUCH a great kid.......he hasn't given us any ideas--the only thing we've come up w/ is one of those visa/mastercard gift cards that he can spend anywhere.....but that isn't very exciting.
He's a gentleman, he's very funny, he's handsome and popular....he has a cell phone and all the things teenagers like---mp3 player, etc......
We thought about a cell phone belt holder, and some American Eagle clothing...which he asked for......but hasn't shown me what he likes. He will play football in the fall...so some of that 'underarmour' stuff would be in order but again $$$---my 50-75 bucks won't go very far on those types of things.....just brainstorming here.....:)
Anyway, I'm stumped.

My 14 year old is like that too; and to be honest, he does enjoy the gift cards the most. iTunes cards, Target cards, GameStop cards, Best Buy or Circuit City...he likes the freedom of deciding exactly what he wants. Maybe get a $25 card and then some UnderArmor shirt or a cool tshirt, or a poster of a current band he likes - that's the kinds of things ds would like if I wanted to get 'stuff' vs. just cards. The other option is to get tickets to a concert or some cool event - we did that with ds last week (John Mayer) and it was a blast...although dh and I felt a bit old with the overwhelming teen crowd there (but would do it again - it was great)!

We're in such a small area, that concerts aren't easy, unless we travel to St. Louis or Kansas City----SOMETIMES Columbia, MO will host concerts, but not often. That would be a good idea though.......the state fair has concerts too.....hmmm....I may need to check into that.
I suppose we'll go w/ a couple of t's and a gift card. Sort of boring, but you are right, he'll be happier with it.........

I know it's no fun for us gift-givers, but my kids always loved the gift cards. Ds16 loves AE and thinks it is just too cool to be able to pop in whenever he wants, check out the sales and then buy something all on his own (so to speak). His dad got him one of those Visa cash cards for his birthday and he loved it. My kids aren't really into alot of the electronic gizmos, although they do have cell phones, so we were always at a loss as to what to get them. Amazingly, the thing I hate giving the most (gift cards) are the things they *love* getting the most. :)
If you are missing out that there is no *real* present to open (I mean, how much fun can opening an envelope be??) just be very creative in wrapping the gift card. A large box with nothing but paper wadded up inside it (except the card, of course--taped to the bottom so it doesn't get lost in the paper) or a small box with the card rubber banded to a brick, or a box within a box withing a box sorta thing. I've used all of these ideas at one time or another JUST so I could give something besides a little ol' envelope. :)
Sorry, I'm not very original, but it's all about what *they* want, right?

Yes--we are in Jeff City, so depending on the venue, we could easily get home in 1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs.....KC is closer to 3 hrs.
Last year we went to Hannibal and did the whole Tom Sawyer tour thing (at his request, believe it or not) and it was a blast....so I asked him this year if he wanted a destination or a gift (we did get him some inexpensive tshirts last year too....) and he wants a gift....which I TOTALLY understand....but I thought we could combine some things.....but w/ a tight budget, that makes it tough......no overnights.......no expensive tickets....yada yada yada.....he DOES want to go to Six Flags, though, and I have coupons (not sure how good they are), but NOT next week.........4th of July will be a mess there, I expect....
We also went to the state fair last year, and that was fun....and although none of the rest of us are big fans, he particularly likes Country music, and the State Fair generally has a couple of popular performers (country and pop/rock) so maybe a promise of a concert then and something more generic now? Something to mull over....
