I have a 15 year old daughter who is truly gorgeous. She has recently wanted to become punk and wants to destroy her hair with odd cuts and colors. I do not want her to change and be that different. Do I let her do what she wants or restrict her from it?

Well ... I get a lot of flack for my 13yo DS' hair.

What you have described is really more of a fashion statement.

I think it's normal for teens to want to change their looks on occasion.

Julie - I don't know about W's school - but I was just at L's school this week and long hair on boys is definitely back in! I commented on it to L and she agreed - everyone's hair is getting longer (boys I mean). They remind me of the boys *I* went to HS with in the 70s!!

I think this is a natural part of being a teen - changing personality AND changing looks. If you are uncomfortable, you can talk to her about *why* you don't like it (people will judge her differently, you're afraid the 'punk' look is an indication of dangerous behavior, etc) and let her weigh the consequences. She also may be trying to get away from being identified mostly as "gorgeous" - sort of an in your face way of saying "Ok, if I'm not so gorgeous, do you still like me?" both to you and to other kids.

I agree that I would probably let her make the change in her hair, but agree that if there are personality changes going along with it that may be a point of concern. My dd has gorgeous long reddish hair and I would hate to see her change the color/style, but would let her if she wanted to. Luckily she loves her hair and the attentions she gets by having gorgeous hair.

Let us know how things go and if there are personality changes, I think she might bear watching. Otherwise it is probably just another phase.
