DS18 graduated Sunday and it was such a bittersweet day. DH, DD15, myself, MIL and my parents attended the ceremony and it was lovely. Our school superintendent's DS- their only child- was part of DS' graduating class, so there was a bit of extra fanfare which was nice. DS graduated with "highest honors" and as an AP Scholar of Distinction. He had no desire to have a big graduation party but we had cake and champagne at home for the family. He had brought home three bottles of wine from Germany last summer and we had been waiting for a special occasion to open them, so we shared them with the family in celebration of his graduation.

The evening was wonderful, but sad because he will soon leave for college some 500 miles away. In fact, we go down to UArk this weekend for his honors college orientation/registration. I know this summer will fly by in the blink of an eye and before we know it it'll be time to make that drive down again to move him into his dorm. ::sigh:: For the time being I'll be trying to just enjoy this last few weeks of having him at home and spend as much time with him as I can. Last night we went shopping for a bag for his new notebook computer (our grad gift to him) and he is really a lot of fun to be with. I laughed all evening as he shmoozed the sales clerks (all female), asking if this bag matched his eyes or accentuated his biceps- only DS would ask such things. He did get three phone numbers and a notebook bag before we headed home, lol.

Boy I'm gonna miss that kid....

My DD's graduation is this Sat. I am hoping it doesn't rain so it can be outside, otherwise it's forced into the gym, which will probably be hot & stuffy and each grad can only have 2 guests. Of course, that would probably make my 11 yo DS happy since he said "do I have to go?" I said yes, but you can bring your IPod. lol There are over 400 grads, so i know it will take a while to read the names. My DD will go to a school a little over 2 hrs. from home, so I don't think she will be home every weekend, but it's not so far that she has to wait for Thanksgiving. I don't think I could deal w/ that.

I guess we are getting used to having her gone a little at a time. She went away for the weekend w/ some friends after the prom. Next week she goes to orientation for 2 days. Then she has 2 one-week vacations coming up--one is w/ a friend and her aunt, who agreed to bring her along for company for the girlfriend, the other is w/ her dad & brother (we're divorced). I hope that somewhere in there she finds time to get a job!

My DH is one of those guys who can't wait for the kids to grow up & leave home. It's not just my kids either--he feels the same way about his DD, who will be a senior next year. I think it's too bad that he can't enjoy them growing into adulthood. My DD can still be a pain in the neck and still have to be reminded to get her sandals out of the living room, but I enjoy her company too and enjoy the times we can spend together, which are getting fewer.
