Great 'New' Music

One of DD's friends burned her a CD of some great 'new' music she's just discovered. What's on the CD? Among others:

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds
Tom Jones - She's a Lady
Ike & Tina Turner - Rollin' (on a River)
Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues

This cracks me up! Maybe 'our' music wasn't all that bad after all. It's blasting away in her room and hearing to it makes ME feel 15 all over again ... and even younger.

Wow! That's hilarious.

We visited Graceland over Xmas break and DS3 was so incredibly bored. All we got was "yes, I KNOW who he is" long sigh........

I know what you mean about hearing those songs. Nothing relieves my stress like listening to Carly Simon in the car and singing along(badly but who cares? I know the words)

I may be a bit younger because this is all music my parents listened to! I appreciated it and still do and my kids are exposed to all kinds of music from all eras -- all the way back to classical and opera -- as we have a very strong artistic streak in the family with everything from musicians to artists to dancers in the lot.

Quite often I'll hear a song my dd likes and say "that sounds familiar" only to find it is a cover or remix or contains a sampling from an older song. I'll then pull up the original on itunes and play it for my dd who is often shocked and surprised how much of the "new stuff" is actually "old stuff"...

Yeah - I love that my daughter listens to Eric Clapton with my DH, and other "old" songs. She downloaded some music that my bro showed her - more music from the old days!

What fun!

Here too - Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan got ds into playing electric guitar. And he likes Beatles and Pink Floyd and Santana in moderation too.

I remember when I was about 30 (17 years ago or so) and we had this 'kid' who was 18 start work, and said that Styx was 'classic' - growing up in Chicago, Styx was in your face everywhere and I found it hilarious that they were now 'classic'.

Well, I must say that I am quite jealous of your kids actually liking "good" music! LOL! Mine are totally into the stuff I can't stand - ugh! But then again, I have always liked my parents music, which includes 40s and 50s music, as well as easy listening, new age, and classical.

Cool - some of my favorites. I would have to include James Taylor in there, though. I'm happy to report that my ds17 is starting to appreciate some of this older music. We were driving in the car one day and we heard an old song and he remarked he's going to have to get that for his Ipod - shocked me. There is this new video game which includes a guitar attachment - and you have to follow likes notes. It's got that old song by Cheap Trick and my ds tried to stump me last night by asking me what band played the song, but he couldn't. Then he asked me who played "Roxanne". LOL. I got that one, too.

Whenever a remake or an "old" song that is popular now comes on the radio my children don't even realize that they are not new songs. When I start singing along they almost always ask, "How do you know this song?" I just tell them that I was young once too.

I have such a wide and varied taste in music. As you can probably deduce by my board handle, my favourite group is, has been, and always will be, ABBA.

I think the reason I like so much old music is because, until I was about 10 years old, the only station that was played in our house was GOLD FM, which plays hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. My parents also listen to Magic AM, which plays the real nostalgic ones - Johnny Tillotson, Bobby Vee, Connie Francis or Petula Clark anyone? - and on cable we have a series of radio stations - TV radio, and it's rarely off Jukebox.

My parents are proud of my tastes in music - Mum and I like so many of the same things. However, I also listen to heaps of new music. There's always music being played in our household and I wouldn't have it any other way. My peers may make fun of me for knowing so much, but they won't be happy when I beat them at Buzz The Music quiz. Actually, I beat my parents by a landslide. That was fun.

Oh, and I love those "new" mixes on the radio, all the cover versions. Sometimes they're better, but when I know the original song and know it well, that makes me happy.

I also liked ABBA. And one of my favorite songs, ever, is Petula Clark's "Downtown".

My most memorable oldies are Mowtown--Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Isaac Hayes. But Simon & Garfunkel are in there, too, and my kids like that, esp. Graceland. I listen to the pop and hip-hop radio stations now and like a lot of the current music, also.

And then there's the mix (Enya and don't know who else), "Pure Moods" which DS17 likes whenever I play it. That's a good one to study to or relax with legs up the wall.
Recently I was playing some classical ballet music and DS17 said, "Mom, help! I'm falling asleep." Guess I didn't play enough of that over the years.

Last night I saw a 20-something girl with a Led Zeppelin shirt on. Never could stand that hard rock stuff, and I still cannot, but both of our sons will listen to that at times. And I wish I could learn to like country, but it just slows me down so much in aerobics that I can't stand most of it. But I know a lot of teens do like it along with their parents, so that's good.
