I think it's kind of strange that my son, who is in 5th grade, isn't allowed to wear a Halloween costume to school, but the high school kids can. In fact, they even have prizes for best costumes. My DD & her friends decided to all be characters from the Nickelodeon cartoon show Doug that was on a few years ago. She is going to be Doug's sister, Judy Funny. She was showing me the costume last night, and she looked cute. I think she got the good deal on getting that character since one of the kids was blue in the show, so that girl is actually painting her face blue. I hope it comes off.

When my DD was little, I always made her Halloween costumes. When she was about 3, I made a crayon costume out of felt, with the hat as the point of the crayon. She won a contest w/ that one. Another one of my favorites was a princess costume that had the pointy hat with the veil. She used to wear the hat around the house a lot after that. Then when my DS was born, my DD was 6, then my ex & I split up when the kids were 7 & 1, so I really didn't have much time for sewing after that. So my poor son was deprived by getting the store bought costumes, although it doesn't seem to have affected him much. lol He's just concerned about how much candy he is going to get.

Here, costumes stopped in elementary (so through 5th); ds14 hasn't gone out trick or treating since he was 10. Nothing in HS. I think he's hoping they at least get candy or are in festive moods, as it's a 'blue' day and he likes 'white' days better, but...that's about it here.

Here, everyone dresses up for school ... kindy all the way through high school! Not everyone does in middle or high school, but there are still lots of kids that do.

We weren't especially good at planning Halloween this year. 15yo DD planned on wearing the witches' costume I made her a few years ago but when she tried it on last night, it was much too snug. I tried letting the seams out but it was still too tight and I was afraid the seams would just pull apart at school, so we vetoed that one. Then she decided to wear last years' Red Riding Hood costume, but came down this morning in jeans, a western shirt and pink cowboy hat. ????

12yo DS is totally passing on Halloween this year ... no costume, no trick-or-treating, nothing! My 'baby' is too old for Halloween? How sad is that? When he was 2-3, he was a huge Winnie the Pooh fan and was 'Piglet' two years in a row. He wore that costume around the house, even.

Like you, I have made many a Halloween costume over the years ... yards and yards of fabric and trim and hours of sewing.

But, even if the trick-or-treating days are mostly over for DD and DS, I don't think my sewing days are!

My kids are both in Catholic schools -- my son in elementary and my daughter in high school -- and at both schools they continue to have a tradition of dressing up for Halloween.

The guidelines are simple -- no masks that cover the face (safety issue), no replica weapons allowed, and nothing in really poor taste (ie dead babies and the like). At my son's school it is actually a fund raising event with a dance-athon. At my daughter's high school its a chance to be out of their uniforms for a day. Both my kids dressed up today making it for a very rushed and early morning for me! My daughter dressed as a vampire (she looked GORGEOUS) and my son as a homicidal cowboy (don't ask but let's say lots of red lipstick was involved to create bloody effects).

But I have heard of teachers who don't allow costumes because they find them distracting and to them I say "Bah Humbug". For one day of the year RELAX. Kids are kids for such a small period of their lives -- why not let them have the happy and fun memories of dressing up in spooky or fantasy outfits?

My DD loves Halloween and we always spent a lot of time on her costumes. I was another one who would get the sewing machine out and go crazy. She always wore her costume to school although I do recall in 5th and 6th grade they were not allowed to wear them for whatever reason. But she picked right back up in the middle school. She is a jr now and Halloween is a big deal in her high school. They give out prizes too for best costume during their lunch. And she still goes trick-or-treating. A large group of friends get together and usually end up back at my house afterwards.

DD is a pirate this year. She got up extra early this morning so she could curl her poker straight hair and she wore a red skull cap with big hoop earrings, gaucho (sp?) pants and high heeled boots. She even took it upon herself to put on a camisole under the tiny stripped shirt. I was totally taken back by that because I was already prepared to have out traditional battle about her costume being too revealing....lol.
