Does your teen (ds, dd or ss, sd) go "hang out with friends" after school? If so how often? Every day? For how long?

Maybe that's just a trait of sons of physicists. ;o)

Nah, sons of construction workers can be the same way. LOL Z was always at home too, usually with his nose in a book or watching the History Channel.

Yea, could be. He has a double dose of "nerdness". His father is a research engineer; his sister is an engineering student. We are a strange family!

Well, he might not be poor at math just because he is not careful. He just doesn't get great marks, a big difference. My DS was like that in Grade 9 & 10. It turned around last year, probably because he had a male teacher with a Master's Degree.
Has your DS taken any programming? That was what helped turned around both our kids. Now, both love to program, especially C++ & object programming.

I don't encourage my kids to "hang out" much, I guess I'm training them to be good future husbands....lol

He rolls his eyes at the thought of programming - that's a Dad/geek thing.

I wouldn't let my kids just wander around either.

My son also likes to 'hang out' with his friends a lot - and might do it from after school till bedtime every day if I didn't have some limits. On the one hand, I think it is normal and healthy to start spending more time with friends - but on the other I believe family is important, and I'm not crazy about all his friends. SO...I monitor by making sure I know WHO he is with and where they are/what they are doing (in a general sense, at least) with a firm rule that he always be home for dinner. This seems to be a really good balance, and I think he actually LIKES knowing that he has to be here for dinner. On the weekends, he is free to hang unless we have something planned, in which case he's expected to be with us. So i try to plan a few fun things

Too bad about that "picky" teacher. My DD had a physics high school teacher like that.
Here, DS has no choice. He has to take calculus if he wants to accepted into any physical science or math program.

Too bad about the programming. Here it is considered "kinda cool" in DS's high school. It's definitely not in the realm of geekdom. It helps that the kids get to do write games. Boys love that kinda thing.
