Harry Potter Day around here....

So our preordered copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows just arrived. My dd was up early this morning so anxious and nervous to get her copy. She's been waiting for months. I checked my order history online and I preordered the book for her in February! Last night I took her out to see a movie to distract her from her anticipation. There were alot of Harry Potter events in the city but we don't live close enough to have participated unfortunately.

Just as she did with Half Blood Prince, the courier brought the book to the door, rang the bell and she just RACED down the stairs to grab the book. She jumped up and down, squealed a bit and then prepared for a full day of reading.

Her ritual with new books is the same every time: she takes out the book, runs her hand over the cover, reads the entire jacket, cracks it open, smells it (she says she loves the smell of new books and I agree with her), read the dedication and then kicked me out of her room so she could start reading. She only regrets that she has to break for lunch!!! LOL!!!

She will read all day until she's finished it. Based on the size of the book and that she started around 10:30AM, I figure she will be done by 8PM. Then I will finally get my opportunity to read the book. I admit last time, I read almost straight through the night until I was done.

Its a great thing to share this sort of thing with my daughter. I was an avid reader myself and she seems to have inherited that gene and we love to discuss books we've both read. Harry Potter is a unique phenomenon indeed given adults and children alike can enjoy the stories.

Happy Harry Potter day to you all!

Glad you are having fun with it.

We are not HP fans in this house. The books are alright but just not our taste in literature so no real HP fever here. My oldest (at 19) would probably read it if I pick up a copy. I am sure they will be at the grocery store in the next few days. My youngest (at 17) has no interest;not into fantasy.

But have fun and enjoy.

I pre-ordered our copies for in-store pick up -- in California. And forgot to change it all when we arrived in Colorado a few weeks ago.

Sooooo ... last night me, DD, DS and I went down to Barnes & Noble for the HP Party. We had never done this before (always had the books delivered by courier) and DD felt that since it was the last opportunity to actually attend a HP Party, we went. I got the little piece of paper that said I could get in line to get the book, left DD and DS inside to enjoy the festivities and then went and got in line. Since my little paper said I did not have a reserved copy, it was to the end of the line that I went.

The store closed at 11:00, everyone inside came outside, got in their place in line and at 12:01, the store opened again to start the book sales. I have to say, B&N was pretty organized, because we were in and out of the store by 12:45am and there were hundreds of people in front of us. It was fun, actually. Lots of laughter and silliness. There were protestors! From what I could tell, none of them had any real valid points to their anti-Harry Potterism beliefs, and none seemed inclined to engage in a real conversation with anyone defending their positions, just carried (or wore) signs that said things like "Cult", "Harry Potter is BORING", and "Parents! Don't let your children read Harry Potter". ??? Why not?

ANWYAY ... DD and DS started reading the books in the car (I got two copies) so I drove home with the interior car lights on. I found out this morning that they stayed up til nearly 4:00 reading and the way DD is going (more than 1/2 way) she will finish it today.

I read a review of the book on Yahoo! this morning and it states that we will not be disappointed -- all loose ends are tied up, holes filled in, etc. Since C will finish soon, looks like I will be able to start my own reading.

Enjoy!

I am not in love with Harry Potter, I don't jump up and down and scream. Its not a bad book, just not really my style. I will read it after everyone else has a chance.

Shea and Carlin on the otherhand LOVE Harry Potter. We pre-ordered the books back in December as Christmas gifts for them. We had to order 2 copies because there was no way they were going to share. A friend of Carlin's buy the book from her secretly because her parents are very religious and strict and wont let the girl read the books. They both woke up early this morning and waited for the UPS man to come and drop off the book. I actually like that they both love the book because afterwards they just sit and talk about it for days. Shea and Carlin get along the least out of all the kids so it is nice that they can share something without arguing(too much). They always see the movies together and this year they saw it at midnight. They did not dress up, but they still had a blast.

Its interesting how there's all these folks who are protesting the novels as somehow evil and corrupting and anti-religious. My goodness, the ultimate lesson in these books is how friendship, loyalty, love, and honour eventually triumph over evil. So JKR chose to express this theme through a story set in a mythical world that coexists with our world featuring people with magical powers. Big deal. The themes of hope, family ties, unity, and overcoming misfortune are so wonderful I think they are like parables for our modern times.

But the problem is that religious folks don't choose to see those things. They believe there is only one way to communicate the messages of their faiths. But....if they truly want to reach their youth they would take advantage of this phenomenon to look for the things in the novels that reinforce thier beliefs and principals because I'm sure they are there...

...ah well...getting off my soapbox now and just anxiously waiting for my daughter to finish the darn book so that I can start!!!

Happy Harry Potter Day right back atcha!

Leah and I went to Barnes and Noble last night just to soak in the atmosphere. We pre-ordered from Amazon, so the book arrived this morning. L was at the gym when it arrived, so I had to wait until she came home to let her tear it open.

Now, we have one book and two bookmarks - we'll take turns reading, but she gets preference. She's afraid her friends will finish it first, and accidentally give away something, so she wants to finish it quickly.

Sorry to see the series end, but glad that it happened when it's still so popular - not "past" its time.

This morning I had to pick up my Mom at the hairdressers (she's one of those once a week, standing appt. little old ladies) We went to lunch, I dropped her to do some grocery shopping and went to pick up Harry at Sam's Club. I got 1 book and 1 book on CD. I am the big reader in the family, so I get the book. DH doesn't read, but he drives a lot for our business and he listens in the truck. DS listens to Harry every night as he goes to sleep, we have all of them either on tape or CD. When I got home, I took the CD's up to my room and started reading the book myself. When DS saw it he disappeared and suddenly was there with the CD's and wanted to know if he could open them. He was quicker than I thought he would be. What he ended up doing was downloading some of the CD's onto the computer, there are 17 of them, then he loaded it onto his i-pod. So now he will be having that plugged into his ears until it is finished. I thought it was a pretty good idea actually. Once he is finished with what is on there he will do the same with the next segment.
I absolutely love the Harry books and have from the beginning, we used to read them aloud together, but now with Kelsie 17 and Jaryd almost 15 that doesn't work. I so still read with Jaryd, but to read the whole Harry would take too long for either of us to wait. We just don't have the time together like that anymore.
Hope everyone enjoys, and don't leak anything!

Harry Potter isn't really my style of reading, but Z is a huge Harry Potter fan, for years that was the only reading we could convince him to do!

Your comment about the protesters brought up a memory of when we moved to NC and one of the movies was coming out.
