He's made his college decision...

DS18, my senior, has made his college decision. Next fall he will attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. :::sigh::: He has been accepted into their Honors College (big honor for an incoming freshman) and will major in Biochemistry, minor in Physics and be a student in their PreMed Studies program.

This is definitely NOT DH or my first choice for him. We live in Indiana, and had hoped DS would choose IU, Notre Dame or Purdue University (he was accepted at all three, also Vanderbilt, Duke and Northwestern). Fayetteville is a long, long way from home! My younger brother went to graduate school there, and I know F-ville is lovely and the U of A is a decent school. DS has an alumni legacy scholarship through my brother and can attend for in-state tuition (other scholarships are in the works as well).

We are trying to get enthusiastic along with DS about his college plans. He has been contacted by the track coach and invited to try to walk on to the track team, which is currently ranked #1 in the NCAA Division I polls- yikes!- but it is a long shot that he would make it as they are pretty deep with underclassmen in his events. We're trying to stay positive though, lol.

This is such an exciting, scary and bittersweet time for us. I keep thinking about him as a baby, toddler and elementary schooler and I never thought this day would come....where has the time gone??? I have no idea how I am going to ship him off to a college 8 hours away!!!

While I totally understand your disappointment in his decision not to go a more "prestigious" school, maybe he prefers to be a big fish in a smaller pond. And he IS in the honor college. As for track, maybe that need not be his passion in college. There is something to say about leaving room to study, especially if he is heading towards the health sciences.
In other words, count your blessings!
My honors student, a sophomore, just flunked two of her honors classes and is screwing up her life in many other ways. You are blessed. Let your son know you are proud of him.

I'm sorry that he didn't choose one of the colleges nearer to home and/or one of the more prestigious colleges.
