Here, sitters/nannies/daycare typical stops at age 12 (Grade 7). At 11/12, kids are legally allowed to be left for a few hours without adult supervision. I actually don't know any kid who had a nanny/babysitter at age 12 and over. Few went to an "off school" service (to help with the little ones) but most went home. There is most likely only an hour or two time to cover between "kids home" and "parents home". Most parents adjust their working hours to limit that time or their child may go to friend's house (with that mom being paid).
A few parents hire a local teenager to watch the kids for that hour or two after school. My DD did that when she was 13. Perhaps you can do the same.
I can see it if Mom & Dad are away overnight. That is different from daily babysitting. Here is actually very rare that parents going away without their kids.
I've personally never hired a sitter.
Never had to hire one.

I sit teens, but it's never for a one day thing or just for a few hours.

Same thing here. My DD was babysitting after school at 12/13. DS has done some babysitting too.
Here, if parents go away over night, many times the teens go and stay with a friend. We have had weekend guests like that.
