Homecoming?

If you have a high schooler does your school have Homecoming? Do they have a football game? A dance? Are your kids going? Our small midwestern community is huge on high school football. The homecoming game is Friday, Sept. 23 and the dance is Saturday the 24th. I haven't been to a high school football game in years - Justin only did band through sophomore year so I guess the last Homecoming game I went to would have been in the fall of 2006. The boys each went to a couple Homecoming dances - a couple with a group of friends and each went to at least one with their current high school 'true love'.

I think it's more a girl thing. My girls went to every dance the school had--even when they had no date. They always went with groups, but honestly, they had the most fun when they just went with friends. It was just hysterical the year they BOTH were in school--one a freshman and one a sr.
The game and the dance were separate. They went to every game by default, since they both were in marching band all four years, and the half-time show was a big event. For that reason, older dd went to three homecoming games AFTER she graduated HS, because her sister was playing in them. Dh & I also went to every game that either kid played in. And we ALL went to our last Homecoming game the year AFTER our YOUNGEST graduated HS, because brothers and sisters of their friends were on the field-- playing football, in the band, in the flag corps, & in the cheerleaders. A bunch of parents we were friends with, thru all our involvement in the kids' extras were there too, and we just had a blast. It was one of those RARE Friday nights that was just beautiful--we didn't get eaten alive or frozen to death.

High school dances seem to be more of a girl thing here too - my DSs only went when they had a girlfriend, but my DD never missed a single one.

Jordyn is a junior. They have a homecoming game (Sept. 30) and have some festivities during the week at school, including a big pep rally and the homecoming court, but they do not have a dance.

We have a homecoming parade on Friday afternoon before the Friday night game, and the dance is on Saturday.

Our local high school does everything, dances, parades, games, pep rallies, bonfires, etc.... My dd went to 2 dances her freshman year and HATED them. She never went back. She has done the parade (well, once when she was injured and could not go to her tennis match!), bon fires and pep rallies in the past. She and her friends are going to the dance this year, just to go , we jsut got new shoes this weekend. It is the weekend of October 3rd.
