I don't really see the teen girls purchasing purses of any particular brand or style around here. They buy what they like.
Personally I'd get a gift cert to the college bookstore where she will be attending in the fall. She can use it for a sweatshirt or something like that. It's nice to be able to buy all that school logo stuff when you are a freshman.
My 18dd is graduating from HS next month. A few people have asked what to get her and although it's up to the giver, I think cash is best for several reasons: the student may need things for her dorm room, or she may need a special wardrobe (depending on field of study or location of college); she may need special supplies for her field of study; she may have dues or activity fees. Money is so diversified - it can meet just about any need.
That said, money is not sentimental. Perhaps you could combine a couple of gifts that would meet both the practical needs of a new college student as well as celebrating the closeness of your relationship. You could get her a special peice of jewelry that marks this milestone in her life and celebrates who she is in your life (perhaps a very nice watch or as you mentioned bag/purse or neckalce with pendant or charm bracelet) AND money or a GC. My mother bought my dd a really pretty chain with pendant and she is giving her a little cash as well as some special tools she will need in her field of study. So, she will receive 3 gifts from my mom, two practical and one sentimental.
As a BTDT parent- Since she graduating from HS- is she planning on college in the fall? I would think something in line for school would be more practical- cash towards what she needs or a Gift Card- or a phone card- to encourage calls home!
I'm falling in line behind the others on graduation gifts. I actually own two D&B bags and rarely use them. They are just too heavy! They are weighty when they're empty and when you add a wallet, sunglasses, cell phone, etc., they can get quite cumbersome. While a lovely thought and gestures, it my be better appreciated as a college graduation gift ... when her backpack days are behind her!
My nephew is graduating next month, as well. I am planning on sending him $100. Since he has college tuition sitting in a bank waiting for him, he can spend the $$ however he pleases and I'm sure it will go to party. Oh well.
But for a girl, a nice piece of jewelry in addition to a cash gift is an very lovely idea. A nice set of pearl earrings or small diamond studs might be nice.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure your niece will be appreciate your thoughtfulness.
For my DD, we are buying her a lap top with a printer for her grad. She will need it in September.
Is the niece going on,in September? How about a gift that is more in line with "education", to help her out in September?
A book or a gift certificate for books? Dayplanner? A writing set? A good carry case for her books....?
