I am curious what your rules are on your teens and the movies they can watch and music they listen to.

Hi Stacy, nice to see a familiar face!
I think your very lucky that Connor is so proactive in his life and making conscious and good decisions and not being afraid to ask your opinon and thoughts.

The only thing we banned was porn when I found our younger son exploring on the inet at age 15. Had a long discussion about it.
While I cannot stand all the cuss words in movies, or on TV for that matter, we always let DSs watch it. They also had to listen to my comments about it though, always brief and to the point. Same with the music. Like OPs, it was the sexual degradation of women in some music videos and the casual treatment of drug abuse in movies that really got to me. When I'd see them watching that, they always got a minilecture.

My kids are 13 and I've just recently relaxed my rules on PG-13 movies. They don't go to the theater often, but when they do, I usually check out the reviews on pluggedinonline.com to see what they have to say.
My son is mainly into classic rock (only because his favorite uncle likes it) and occasionally country music; he
My kids are 19 & 17.
The only required, when it came to movies, is that it follows the censure guidelines.
As for music. it wasn't a problem. Both our classically trained musicians.
We actually kept kids away from certain genres of movies while when they were younger. We rarely GO to a movie - the last one was HP5 at midnight last summer and before that was School of Rock. The boys were limited - but not in an alarmist manner - and watched mostly PBS, NICK (back when it was little kid shows) and video tapes.
That being said - they watched movies of quality and relevant topics that were rated PG-13 and R if I heard good things about them or watched them myself. We have watched many of the classic movies like "Caddyshack", "Ferris Buehller's Day Off", "Harry and the Hendersons" and serious conversation movies like "Good Will Hunting" and "Schindler's List". Neither dh or I are into the slasher movies or the raunchy comedies and horror movies are something we discourage too. They watch and like the dumb stuff we all liked as teens too - Napoleon Dynamite, Family Guy etc...
Music - well - I do have a good music standard :) Middle guy listens to classic rock - his 7th grade science teacher made it cool and it has stuck. Oldest listens to angry music one minute and good stuff the next. Our youngest listens to popular music and likes the widest variety of music. He is the music guy in the crowd too - plays music and listens critically to music.... though he loves to thump along in the car with his brother.
I think the more you restrict it the more attractive things become. I listened to it all and love music from U2 to Tim McGraw to Josh Groban.

There's a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day... there's a great big beautiful tom
<<<....degradation of women in general or explicit sexual content that is skewed IMO. There are a lot of stupid movies and songs out there whose main message is wild, casual, meaningless sex
