... the letter that DD's AP Euro teacher gave to all her students today; the day before the big exam. The teacher has pushed these kids so hard -- in fact, sometimes I wondered if she wasn't a bit overly enthusiastic -- but has been there for them every step of the way. If DD e-mailed her a question at 8:30 on a Sunday night, she had a reply before she went to bed. DD was in tears after she read this, and reading it makes me all weepy too.

Dear ones,

You have worked so hard, so long. Your determination, perserverance, heart and willingness to risk have been wonderful - and have endeared you to me forever. I'm proud of each of you for doing more than you had to, for reaching higher. Whatever may result from this one, three-hour long measure of knowledge - I know what hours and anguish you've devoted to TRYING. You need to know - and believe that you are extraordinary young people - in the true sense of that word. The world will be better because people like you "hung in there", "stayed the course", didn't give up - when it seemed only smart to do so. Kudos! (look it up ... last term!)

You will be in my mind and heart every minute tomorrow - so that's a tiny source of strength. The real one is within each of you. Draw from your knowledge, instinct, wisdom and confidence that you have seen this information before - and that your memory is keen. God speed - do your best.*

Love,
Mrs. D.

*angels can do no more.

What a wonderful woman.... sometimes the knowledge that someone out there believes in you is such a huge confidence builder, especially when it is someone who has pushed you so very hard!

Hooray for dedicated teachers! I bet C will remember this teacher and her enthusiasm long after some of the dates and facts from AP Euro have faded!

That's wonderful. My son is taking his AP US History test today, and his teacher had all the kids come to school early so he could prepare and serve them a hearty breakfast before the test. Afterwards, they're all going to Applebee's for lunch.

I love when teachers let Kids and parents know when they are appreciated! So many just tell them and us when the bad things happen! ;)

Wow, what a thoughtful teacher. DS18's HS has a very successful AP program (tops in our state and has produced the nation's top AP student more than once), and it seems that as the program has grown, the teachers have become pretty blase about the tests and how hard these kids work. I can't argue with the success rate, but it is kind of sad that they've lost that little nurturing touch that helps remind these high achieving kids that they are to be commended and congratulated. It is just expected that they will perform well, and that's that.

DS' AP Biology teacher's parting words yesterday- "The exam is Monday at 8. Don't be late and don't stink it up." Heartfelt words to remember.

That is a pretty crummy thing for a teacher to say. You wouldn't happen to be in Connecticut, would you? I remember my DD telling me about the day Mrs. D. was unhappy with some test results and said "While you all were out sunning yourselves at the beach, or whatever it was you were doing that was NOT studying, kids in Connecticut were!"
