My mediocre student just received an acceptance letter from the first school he applied to- a private school to the tune of about 20k a year.

Hello -

Going through the process here too - It sounds like your son wants to go to that school which is half the battle. Where do you live that $20K is expensive - our state school is that much here which stinks!

I think you have to play this school out see what the financial aid package looks like and go from there. Certainly have him apply to state schools too but the power of sending him to a school he likes will mean he wants to be there! Congrats - by the way - What school is it? if you don't mind me asking.

As for his grades and motivation in high school - they have to be there, take courses they don't care about from teachers who often put more importance on numbers than kids. College become HIS work - he picks the classes, he sees the role the work plays in his future and he can redifine himself as the man he wants to be known for. College is different than high school and getting them there is half the battle. A middle of the road high school student can often be a stellar college student. It is very different - In my school they always accused me of being an over achiever - which cracked me up considering all the time my report card said "capable of more if she would apply herself". I did four years worth of credits in three years - if he wants it he wil do it.

I just graduated from college last year so this whole process is a mystery to me too. Trouble is we want what is best from them and don't know how to get there. Talk to his guidance counselor too - she can steer you in the right direction. He may have a chance to play ball there - many small schools welcome players with ability and heart. Ask lots of questions to people who seem to know :) Good Luck!

I pray my wish, will come true, for my child, and your child too...

Going straight to a job from hs isn't always a bad thing either - it has them doing something to earn their keep while they figure out what they want to do with their lives - and a few extra months flippin burgers for minimum wage can be pretty helpful in motivating them to figure out what that might be.
