If she is dyslexic, she should already be in an IEP.

Sadly I don't have a professional diagnosis of Dyslexia - everytime I brought it up to teachers, it kept getting brushed of for the next teacher (for example, K'garden teacher said "dyslexia can't be diagnosed until 1st grade" First grade teacher said "Can't be diagnosed until 2nd grade."

Back in 2nd grade per the teacher's request and our approval, the school provided paperwork to have teachers and parents evaluate him (ADHD paperwork) - came back negative.

Very interesting - I wish when we had our testing with the behavioral medicine people (that's who we went through in Germany).

I hear you on the mom issue - my mom loves to brag on me when we go visit (300 miles away).

Does everything have to be a reason to be able to bill my insurance an office visit?

I didn't read all the replies that have been posted but I just want to tell you to hang in there. Don't give up if you think you want your child tested for learning disabilities and/or placed on an IEP or 504. Schools often don't want to pay for the testing or services a child may need so they are not always as forthcoming with answers and guidance as they should be. You are really your childs best advocate and often times parents have to fight for what they think their children need. I had always felt that my daughter had some type of learning disability and as far back as first grade I started asking her teachers what they thought. Everyone said the same thing..."she just doesn't apply herself". If your daughter is anything like mine you know she is trying HER best and to hear someone say that is infuriating. It took me until she was in 7th grade to finally figure out what had to be done. I formally requested in writing that she be tested. I was very specific in what my concerns were. I sent a copy to her guidance counselors, the principle and head of the special ed. dept. in our town and I made numerous phone calls to all parties making sure that they understood my concerns. In short I made myself a real pain in the neck and so they went ahead and tested her. Tests came back that she had "weaknesses" but not eligible for an IEP or 504. I did not accept that as an answer and told them I wanted to have her independently evaluated. At first they said that I would have to pay for it but later said that the school system would foot the bill. As it turned out she did have a "non verbal learning" disability that effected her visual/spatial processing skills (math and science are tough for her) as well as some other issues. Although she was no eligible for an IEP she was put on a 504. The accommodations that were made for her in high school were very helpful to her. She ended up graduating with a 3.0. Now that she is in college she receives support and tutoring from them. She just received her grades, 2 A's a B and a C (in a science class of course) but she feels that the support she receives has been helpful. The bottom line is though it can seem overwhelming don't give up. Is there any type of support group in your town for parents with children that have special needs. I know we do and they were helpful in getting me pointed in the right direction. Good Luck!!
