That is awesome! My 13 yo did competitive cheer from 1st through 5th grade. She loved it!! They didn't do tumbling, though. But she always watched in awe of the other girls doing it.

Congratulations to your dd! Varsity squad, huh?? Very impressive! I know you must be very proud. :)

And good call on having a "professional" teach her the tumbling. :)

Congrats!!

DD's main goal for the summer is to get her tumbling down. The coach's pulled her out of class one of the last days of school and asked about all of her injuries - if she was better and how she felt about flying again. The varsity coach did all of the talking. They also asked about her tumbling. DD said she had her back handspring - she did have it before all of her injuries, now she is only doing it with a light spot. They want her to have her back tuck - haha I don't see that happening. When summer started she had it all planned out - 3 nights of tumbling a week. We also bought her a trampoline for her bday. Yeah - in the 2 weeks school has been out - she's gone to tumbling/flying class one night a week - and this class is more focused on flying, so atleast she is getting her confidence back with that. I don't even think she has touched the trampoline. She has had an extremely tight schedule - work, boyfriend and she has spending alot of time with friends (YAY!)

I'm guessing she doesn't want it as badly as she said she did - idk but unless something changes dramatically in the next month (tryouts aren't until the beginning of August) - I'm gonna have one very bummed JV cheerleader.... The varsity squad lost 9 seniors this year so it's hers if she wants it.... The coaches had a mini clinic for the candidates last week and dd did all the flying with the varsity girls - and one of the bases told the varsity coach that she wanted dd as her flyer and the coach said "that could be arranged" - so blah... idk what dd's deal is....

Right now DD can do a cartwheel and a "sorta" round off... but there's a whole list of other things that they want to incorporate into the routines that she's never even tried.

The sad thing is dd's cartwheel and roundoff are pitiful lol - she's like in slow motion with them. She can do the splits and she can do the back handspring, but she psychs herself out with it. As long as someone is there she can do it...

I'm not sure if she thinks she is a shoo-in for varsity and has decided not to bother working for it (she was the only one the coaches called into to talk to) or if the pressure of working her butt off for it and possibly not getting it is bothering her. I know she is absolutely terrified of flying again and getting injured and letting the team down again (they blew every competition they had last year w/ dd out of it).

There are 2 local gymnastic schools and she was going to go to each 1 hour/week and then their is a cheering school that was offering tumbling/stunting/jumps class, that is one night a week for 2 hours. Last Monday was the first night of the current session for one of the gymnastic schools, when I took her to work, she had planned on going that night. By the time I picked her up from work, she had plans and decided to do the class on Weds instead. By the time Wed. came along it hit her that Wed. is the only night in the week that J (boyfriend) doesn't have football. I don't know if she plans on trying again next week or not - I'm not saying a word.

The other gymnastic school has a tumbling class for cheerleaders every Thursday from 6-7... last week she and her friend had all intentions of going. They always did it together in between dd's injuries. So the plan last week was friend wanted dd to come hang out at her house until it was time to go... then her mom would take and I would pick up. Well, friend decided to change her mind and since it was the first time in forever that dd had hung out w/ this girl, dd didn't want to go w/out her. This week... another friend that dd hasn't hung out w/ in forever came over to swim, then J came over to swim and decided to skip football - so gymnastics got blown off again and a bunch of them went to the beach to watch the fireworks instead.

I KNOW she wants this - she's talked about this for forever - I just don't know where her head is at right now. She is completely overscheduled - She works Mon, Wed and either Fri or Sat - 1-5, Tues and Thurs 7-12. In a week and a half she starts drivers ed - Mon, Wed and Fri from 8-11am - Gymnastics A is Monday 7-8, Gymnastics B is Tuesdays, 7-9 and Gymnastics C is Thursdays from 6-7. Then there is J (currently job hunting) that has football everyday from 4-7, except Wednesday. They haven't started weekend practices yet, but that's coming. And dd has 2 cheering camps in the next month and 4 cheering fundraisers....

Whenever I talk to her about it she gets annoyed, so I'm just sitting back and letting her take the lead.... I hear ya about the lack of participation from all the participants. Today the cheerleaders had their 2nd car wash and out of 50 candidates only 10 showed up - same with the little mini-camp they had last week. These were supposed to be mandatory. Should be interesting to see how that pans out.

Good luck to N with the gymnastics and good luck to you!! Especially at the competitions, I am a nervous wreck!! (I think it's the flying that scares me too lol)

Hey, you're talking to the mom of Z, former all conference defensive lineman, 3 year letterman on the defensive line... who was on the bottom of more piles every Friday night from the end of August until the end of October than I care to rememeber.... I learned nerves of steel from that experience - and if it scares me too bad, I just tell bleacher buddy Tracy to watch for me and let me know when it's over!! LOL

Congratulations to N! I'm sure she will have a great year on the Varsity squad. I have many, many fun memories of cheerleading and the peripheral experiences from my high school days and was a little disappointed that C had no interest in all in cheering.

Congrats to your DD.

Taking classes sounds like a good idea. Although I know nothing about cheerleading (we don't have cheerleading in any of the schools here), I would expect that kids can get hurt.

Cheerleading can be as benign as a line of 10 or so girls wearing the school colors doing a lot of clapping, yelling and some dance moves to motivate the spectators to them doing lifts, gymnastic moves, towers and pyramids, and full blown dance routines for the crowd, along with stunts with a small trampoline.
