Kind of spinning off of the 'Gossip Girls' thread here ... this is something I've been mulling about for several months now.

Based on personal experience - I have NEVER had sex with a condom.

IMHO, we also need to open our eyes to the subtle sex portrayed in everything our children see. From the cover of magazines with female celebrities most always scantily clad down to the fact that some stores sell padded bras and thongs marketed to children. Our children can't even watch seemingly family friendly shows without seeing the portrayal of women in a sexualized manner. Take the new show, The Singing Bee, for example. Should be a fun show that families can watch together. However, have you noticed the "Honey Bees" - the all female dancers wearing tight or short dresses? Why can't one show feature a female in a non-sexual manner - a way that uses her own brain and not her appearance? To our children, these subtle clues are telling them how to act. Women are to be in the background of a show, with no speaking parts, and wearing as little clothing as possible. Why?

I wonder about the feeling of anonymity we have on the internet and with text messaging.

I type things on this board and surely on debate boards that I would never have the nerve to say face to face.

I would like to think that this girl is communicating things by computer that she wouldnt feel comfortable stating in person or even over the old fashioned cord telephones.

I think we expect kids to act older-older is seem as 'mature'. Having 2 late bloomers, I have been down THIS road. If they aren't dating at 16, they are immature and/or socially backwards in our society. Heck, even my calling the boys 'late bloomers' has a negative connotation to it!!!! They're 'late'.

The world would likely be a better place if more teens were 'socially backwards' but that simply isnt going to happen. We compete on everything from GPAs to first BF/GFs.

And have you ever noticed that when the "bee" IS smart and non-sexual, she's also what most would consider 'homely'???? I can't stand that.

There are many a beautiful girls and women who are also smart, capable and independent!

IMHO..Hands down, it’s media. TV sit-coms, movies, magazines, internet, and even radio. (Ever listen to Dr. Drew?) We’re inundated with sexual messages. Even the most benign family friendly shows like “Friends” implies a sexual encounter after just briefly knowing someone. Main-shelf popular magazines are full of “techniques”. The list goes on and on.
