So finding this site has been good for me! My 16 yr. old daughter is driving me nuts and I see that I'm not alone. We are having "Curfew wars" at our house. She feels she should be able to stay out 'till 1:00am when she wants, now that school is almost over. I've always said 10:00pm schoolnights, up till 1:00am weekends. Does everyone allow later curfew's in the summer? Just looking for advice on this one...thx.

Hi-I have an almost 18 year old graduated from high school daughter who, just now at almost 18, is barely allowed out until 1 a.m.

I think 16 is way too young to be out until that time. Does your daughter drive? Alot of states have 11 and 12 p.m. curfews for "junior" drivers.

Ask her what is going on and where that she feels the need to be out until 1 a.m....I don't think you'll like the answer.

For a 16 year old girl, yes 10 p.m. is fair on school nights and I would think midnight during the summer.

She has to have something to look forward to as she gets older and if 1 a.m. is her curfew at 16 what's it going to be at 17 and 18....3 a.m.?

Just my opinion.

Hi there,

We have a set curfew of 12:00, I guess during the school yr, it was rare for DS to be out unless it was school related, it has always been come home right after the event which doesn't seem to be past say 10:00. We are struggling a bit right now with staying awake :) See my thread below. I think we will always stick with 12:00 for weekends and if the event warrents later, we'll decide at that time :) One thin we did with DS from the beginning was talk alot about being responsible for his health and well being. He has never just stayed out for the sake of staying out :) When he's tired or there is nothing going on, he'll come home, sometimes 9:00. That way we don't have a problem when he asks to do something that goes till 1:00. We also have the "hangout house" so I'm lucky that alot of times the kids are here!

Good luck,

Julie

We didn't really have to worry about this issue since where we live, people under 18 aren't allowed to drive past midnight. I think 1:00 a.m. is a little late for a 16 yo. Now that DD is 18, she can stay out later, but it's not usually past 12:30 and a lot of times she's home by 12:00. I was surprised that Saturday after graduation and attending TEN graduation parties (probably for 1/2 hr. each) she was home at 11:45. I think that after 8:00, they were so tired, they just stayed at the last friend's house to watch TV.

Personally we will expect our son home in a decent amount of time following the conclusion of whatever even he's been in attendance of.

Movie got out at 11. Be home by 11:30.

Football game ended at 10:00, be back 10:30 etc..

School day, weekend, summer break... it doesn't mater. The rule will still apply.
