I personally have not seen an article in my local paper covering any teens or children that have been hurt through use of the internet. I understand it happens and you certainly can search out and locate specific incidents but, by the numbers, our kids are in far more danger from the people they associate with IRL on a daily basis
I HAVE, in the past 3-4 mos, watched the trial of a 2nd gr teacher accused of molesting 9+ students, the trial of a couple who talked 5 or 6 neighborhood teen girls into forming a prostitution ring, and watched as a coach from a nearby high school fled the country to avoid prosecution for sex with his athletes.
Know the real risk, educate your son on safety, and then pick your battle. Is this worth fighting with him and your DH over?
If you decide yes, that's fine. I trust you love your child and are doing what you think is best. We may disagree but we are all making the best choices we can where our kids are concerned.
My personal experience not matching what I was reading in the media is what made me go looking for some hard facts and statistics on internet safety. Sorry, I wasn't clear on that connection in my other post.
Not a problem, if it helps someone else, I am more than happy to tell the world.
This just is not the same world we grew up in and just as you can't trust the strangers on the street you can't trust people your children meet online.

You know, Recently I listened to Oprah when she had Bill Cosby on as a guest and he said the same thing... basically this is the idea...
Reinforce that the house is Mine and I pay for everything that is in it. INCLUDING YOU!
If you have a job and can pay for something on your own, it is still mine, as I own YOU and allowed you to have said job. I will continue to own you
