Okay, I'll try to make this as short as possible. My 16 yo ds started driving in August. He received an old car from my BIL, and he is responsible for his portion of insurance, gas, maintenance. To help with these costs, he's been working at a local pizza place (which according to his recent grades, way too many hours).

Ds went to visit his older sister in CA this summer, so dh gave him our calling card number to use ONLY for the trip. In two weeks' time since he returned, he incurred $150 using that calling card number in charges to a friend in the western part of our county. (We don't have LD on our landline, only on our cell phones to be used after hours, because of our financial situation). Ds had to pay the $150 bill (and we cancelled the calling card), and he was restricted from phone use all together. BUT, because he's driving now, we got him a cell phone for EMERGENCY USE ONLY ($19 for 45 mins. a month).

Well, this morning I went online to check our bill for the past month, and he has $450 in charges on his "emergency" cell phone!!!! I am livid, especially as there is no way he can pay the whole bill himself in one payment, the phone is in our name, and we're financially strapped as it is (and with Christmas coming, to boot!)

What would you do???

Thanks!

I'd pay the bill, then hand him the stub and tell him that this is his holiday AND birthday present for the year.

As hard as it may be, you probably need to remove the phone from his possession.

Deb had good advice as usual - pay the bill and tell him Merry Christmas/Happy Birthday.

I agree with the PP ... I would have DS purchase a phone that has prepaid minutes. That way, he'll have a phone, but be responsible for his own "talk time". There are a lot of phone out there and, even though the minutes are little more expensive that a package plan, it just might help him "budget" his cell phone.

Ahhhhh yes cell phone...I've had expierence with this one LOL. I purchased a "family plan" for daughter and I to use since I could not be accesed by company phone where I was working. She could call me at anytime, leave a brief message ("I got sick at school need to be picked up" etc.). Well lo and behold I got my bill and my charges were less than the aloted time...daughter's charges were almost $300.00! Over TWICE the limit! Looking at the bill carefully I discovered that she was calling an old boyfriend in New York during lunch at school, when she got home from school, in the evenings while she was doing her homework in her room, (one of the reasons she is doing homework in the dining room these days...I can keep an eye on her!), Since we have cable internet the land line was able to be used, however we had cable internet and she could message, email and chat with this boy anytime she chose to...which she was doing WHILE SHE WAS ON THE CELLPHONE to him! I paid the bill and she has been paying me back each month. I also got rid of the cellphones and the plan we were on. I suggest you purchase him one of those prepaid phone plans. As far as Christmas for him? I'd hand him the paid receipt for the bill and tell him "Merry Christmas".

You don't need a different phone
