Before just letting your insurance company know, I would call around to as many insurance companies as you can think of and get quotes for insurance.

We let our insurance company know as soon as the kids got their learner's permits. Our rate won't increase until they have an actual license, but they needed to know. And they're not getting actual licenses until they come up with money for their part of the insurance, plus the deductible. My son is pretty close to having the money as he has been working and saving up since March; my daughter could care less and isn't interested in working, so she won't be driving anytime soon. Anyway, we are planning on buying an inexpensive car as soon as he has the required cash. But we are going to make sure he understands it is our car that we will allow him the privilege of driving, and there will be rules around that. I found several teen driving contracts online and have thought about creating my own custom one, but if nothing else, they have given me lots of things to think about and discuss when the time comes. I especially like the points brought up in this web site: http://sites.google.com/site/parentingteendriverd2/Home/our-contract
Hope this is helpful.

DD has had her licence now for a month.

The only time she drives is if she's going somewhere.
