I find myself missing my DD. Her class is on a trip to NYC.
this week. They have already seen a NYC police beat an
african american man right in front of them. She used to
say that she wanted to live there and after one day, she has
already had second thoughts. They are going to be learning what
the real world is like. I hate that she had to see that. It sounded
pretty bad..

Anyway, this ties into another thing... graduation. How many of
us out here are getting ready for the BIG DAY?? can you beleive
it? They grow up so FAST!

take care

4 weeks holding my breath for graduation. My son actually only has 9 2hour days left of school. But who knows what could happen in these 4 weeks its been a long 12 years I am so ready for him to be done. But on the other hand thinking of the things that I will no longer be able to control.

Yeah I know... thats kinda scary isn't it?
Well, DD has a little more than the 9 days.
I am not sure if she will be exempt from
her exams just yet. DS is probably going
to be. He will be so glad. Here if you miss
hardly anytime and you have an A or a B - you
are exempt.

DD actually got a job working at the college
dining hall and that ends MAY 10. She is making
good money and I think that will encourage her
to go out there and get another good paying
job. She is planning on moving out.. and I
don't think she's ready.

I'm not sure if I believe your story about NYC or not....I've lived here for over 9 years and although I'm sure there are bad cops and bad things happening, none of us has ever witnessed it. It seems unlikely that on a graduation trip the kids would see something so extreme. Hopefully, they're also seeing the many wonderful things in New York.

That said, this kind of stuff can happen anywhere. I hope your DD has more sense than to swear off a city, any city, based on one (granted terrible) incident. I was "scared" of NYC when I was in HS, and now I regret it. It's been a great city for DH and I, and both our kids have flourished here.

Luckly my son wont have any final exams. The school he goes to doesn't have the exams. He's been working full time for two years now plus going to school. Which he will continue working at when he graduates. He hadn't been talking about moveing out until a few weeks ago when a friend of his called him on his cell phone while I was standing there. I could understand the whole conversation. His friend was telling him he needed a roomate. I gave him the look. When he got off the phone I listed the reason why he wasn't ready to move. For one not until you graduate and that part of my job is done. Second he can't even handle giving me his insurance money every week and you think you can pay rent ,gas and girlfriend, food, eveything else that goes with living on your own. He is not ready to move out. And I am not ready for that step yet. I need one step at a time. Trying to keep him here to save his money. He and his girlfriend have been together for two years and plan on getting married when she gets out of school.

Sue,

I'm not sure if I believe your story about NYC or not....I've lived here for over 9 years and although I'm sure there are bad cops and bad things happening, none of us has ever witnessed it.---

I have no reason to not beleive my daughter... (oh its not really a graduation
trip (not that it matters) - she is there for a hair show and they are exploring
NYC while they are there)

I know these things happen everywhere. From what I can gather, the
guy had a baseball bat and a radio and was walking down the street.
Now granted the kids were on the tour bus, but they all seen it. I
plan on asking the teacher when I talk to her. They may have been
looking for the guy, I don't know. Sounds like the man was walking
across the street in a crosswalk when the police stopped him.

In the meantime, my daughter called a while ago and is feeling better
(she gets sick with travel) She was going on about the stores...seems
that she is getting some good deals. Macy's supposedly has some great
deals on dresses for prom. (we paid way up there for hers and now she
finds a great deal in NYC) We figured that they would be expensive in
New York. Another thing that I find interesting is that there aren't
sales tax for items under (110.00) I think thats what she said --WOW.

In any event I am sure that NYC is fine, I just think that one would be
more apt to see things like that in a more crowded area... we really don't
know that circumstances on this event. Regardless, she is liking NYC better
as of her last phone call.
